For example the Scottish and welsh fire service have their flags on their uniform yet the English don't.
My local rugby club has a St George's Day event. Nearly all the local pubs try and celebrate it. No-one is trying to ban it, it's just that no-one gives a shit.

My golf club also does a St Georges day event. But, as Andy says a lot of people don't give a shit.
Within the UK the English don't have the same need to express their individual national identity (they come from the 'winning' side), so they aren't so bothered by their national saint and aren't too bothered at the distinction between England and Britain.
The other home nations are more bothered because it's a chance to express their individuality.
    imo.

It's the same exact principle actually. Develop more advanced weapons than the people you're going to pick a fight with, and then go and colonise them. Boom, you have an empire.

If anything the older empires were more impressive. Once guns came about colonisation was a piece of piss.

And -to be fair- the Romans regarded their time as being 'modern time' too, except it was modern in Latin. The moors were modern in their time too. Having said that, the time we currently live in is modern too, so I guess we're all modern.

On that theory I'm going with the Macedonians and Alexander the great then.

As a counterpoint to this, why do we see the union flag flown by English fans at international sporting events? The Olympics makes sense, but with the likes of the Football World Cup where the other constituent parts of the United Kingdom have their own teams, I really feel that England should fly the St George cross. Then we get on to the question of whether God Save the Queen is the English or British national anthem.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

As mentioned before, I think the point is being missed (at least in the parts I've read). Most people just don't give a shit. It's largely the same in Scotland (at least in the central belt) with St. Andrews Day, but maybe to a very slightly lesser extent.

    Formerly TheStylishHobo and Geesh.
