Just listening to Gustav Holst - The Planets Op. 32 Jupiter and made me think of how much has been accomplished.
Historically? For such a small country to of created and held an empire for so long is astonishing.
There are countless achievements for such a small nation but I suppose militarily was the biggest accomplishment?
Plenty of negatives as well of course, things not to be proud of such as slavery.

When I was thinking I was only considering the past glory as I'm generally negative about the country now but actually there is still greatness in this little country.

We are still one of the greatest nations on earth for sports.
We have some of the leading medical centres.
We still have some of the worlds leading science research centres.
We have some of the worlds best universities.
We still, although under strength, have one of the highest regarded militaries.
We have some of the world's biggest banks and have the financial hub of the world.
When ever you see some crazy new structure built in the middle east etc it is generally designed by British engineers.

    The list could go on.

Sure there are plenty of negatives, like for example there are probably about one million chavs that could do with being executed but for once I'm feeling proud.

Proud to be English, or proud to be British?
I am proud to be British. I was born in Cornwall but all my ancestors are Scottish, so I consider myself to be English and Scottish...

Not as nice as I used to be

Why should I be proud of where I just so happened to be born?

'Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?'

English people often seem very negative about England the days but in so many ways it is still a great nation. Must be the god awful weather making us negative.

Say want you want about Americans but at least they love their country and believe in the positives.

Ps no I'm not American, I lived there for a while but I'm English.

Yes I am proud to be born on a particular patch of mud despite having no say in it and it being blind luck. I am also proud to have brown hair and size 10 feet.

I'm only 1/4 English genetically, but have lived here for most of my life. I'm proud of the nation when it acquits itself well - but it doesn't do so often enough. We seem to be pretty good at not panicking and flapping about when the shit really hits the fan (bombs and the like), but we're pretty shit when it comes to panicking about practically nothing (snow, foxes, etc). We're still pretty racist, we keep voting in essentially the same arseholes over and over again, we care too much about the self and not enough about the broader society and the class war stuff is ongoing and pretty vile.

So on the whole - no.

-- boobs do nothing for me, I want moustaches and chest hair.

For some of them, I get the impression that they are blinded by their pride in their country and can't see any bad sides to it, and can't see that anything good can come from anywhere else.
I remember meeting an old guy in rural Illinois who said something along the lines of 'Why would I want to go to Europe/abroad Everything I want is here.'

Not as nice as I used to be

Not sure about proud but I am grateful. It could have been much, much worse!

I can't really take any credit for achievements of our ancestors so I can't say I've got much to be proud of in that sense.

To clarify, I'm proud of England. If I was born in (say) Russia, I'm less sure I would be proud to be Russian.

Possibly controversial: flag waving is for people who don't have enough personal achievements in own their lives to be proud about, so they seek esteem and validation from wide-reaching and completely random areas such as nationality or region of birth.

I see the Middle Kingdom between Heaven and Earth
Like the Chinese call the country of their birth
We all figure that our homes are set above
Other people than the ones we know and love
In every place with a name
They play the same territorial game
    Hiding behind the lines
    Sending up warning signs

    The whole wide world
    An endless universe
    Yet we keep looking through
    The eyeglass in reverse
    Don't feed the people
    But we feed the machines
    Can't really feel
    What international means
    In different circles
    We keep holding our ground
    Indifferent circles
We keep spinning round and round

We see so many tribes -- overrun and undermined
While their invaders dream of lands they've left behind
Better people -- better food -- and better beer
Why move around the world when Eden was so near?
The bosses get talking so tough
And if that wasn't evil enough
We get the drunken and passionate pride
Of the citizens along for the ride

    They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
    For a change of accent
Or the colour of your shirt
    Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
    Than the pride that divides
When a colourful rag is unfurled

    Just Another Lego Blog

Problem over here is the red tops have masked blatant jingoism with "pride".

Would you say the same about being proud of your children, for instance?
