I hate the xbox dashboard, its full of ads and everything apart from actual games.

I am going into the next generation with an open mind. At the end of the day, I will always have a reasonably up to date gaming PC and wallet-damaging steam library to fall back on.

I think I am the only person in the world who isn't whipped up into a bpibd fury about 3 adverts on the Xbox dashboard and the fact they make kinect.

I dont care about the adverts either. I use the dashboatd to navigate to content and so far the ads have not hindered me in any way. The ads hardly even register.

I find the music and films featured more worrying. They always seem to be promoting X factor pop shit and Adam Sandler movies. I think they need to target their marketing a bit more. Or is that the average xbox demographic?

There was a comment that made me laugh on the front page the other day when some guy called the 720 a 'multimedia whorehouse'.

I don't care about the dashboard. It works, I know how to use it, I play games. It's really not worth getting wound up about, especially as most ads are for Xbox services, not Lynx. Although some are, occasionally.

I find it MORE annoying to have ads IN games.

Im not that fussed about ads or prominent placing of content if they dont interfere with the user experience, which they did. They ads and repositioning of high revenue content made the dash a pain in the tits to navigate.

If by pain in the tits you mean 'Press RB or LB, first tab the cursor defaults to being 'Play Now', with 'Recent' just beneath', then yeah, I agree.

I can understand people getting annoyed, but it seems rather OTT at times.

on what little we know, and the buzz from that, the next PS seems genuinely more exciting.

the faster RAM, tighter gaming focus, and historically, the more interesting exclusives.

@anthonypappa - Do you not think that having a 'tighter gaming focus' limits what the console can do?

Personally, I can't think of one exclusive game that I have wanted to play. For me, if a game is exclusive to one console it can't be very good.

I agree based on the rumors so far but I really don't think Microsoft would release a console that wasn't at least on a par with the next playstation. I think once the pros and cons of each are clear, there will be very little difference.

If you're buying it to play games on, then no.

Erm, do you know why most exclusives are exclusive to a particular platform? Logic fail on your part there, methinks.

@FuzzyDuck - Is it because the games aren't good enough to sell to the other consoles?

the tighter gaming focus for the ps4 is in the extra processing grunt it has, also the RAM is faster - and half of it isn't allocated to a bloated OS.

i.e. the ps4 has a tighter focus on gaming.

And it will still have the same games as the Xbox, so why do Sony not embrace the other features rather than limiting themselves?

Yes, but you'll inevitably end up paying extra for those other things that you may not care for (say, a console that plays Blu-rays for example), or there'll be compromises in the gaming abilities of the platform (Like an iPhone).

    @bumyoghurt

Or is it the games are at least funded by the platform holder and probably developed in house? These games are developed with the host hardware only in mind, so would be total ballaches to run on other platforms. I'm sure the PS3 could run Halo 4 and that the 360 could run Uncharted 3, but both would require massive rewrites and cost a fortune.

And they're in fact so good that they help drive host platform sales.
I know a few folk who've bought an Xbox for Forza, a PS3 for Uncharted and a Wii just for Mario Galaxy.

ps3 already has a rake of multimedia features - blu-ray, online games, films, music, internet broswer etc... they aren't limiting themselves, ps4 will have all that, and likely more - they just aren't installing a massive windows OS on it, and all the built in kinect 2.0 gash.

MS are going for all-out windows 8 domination.

@FuzzyDuck - Those people are idiots then, no game is bigger than a console. Exclusive games are overhyped fanboy nonsense. As I said, if they were any good then developers wouldn't be too scared to release them multiplatform.

That's a completely blinkered and frankly bizarre way of thinking.

I shall now bow out of this thread, ta ta!

Sorry, but that's clearly not true. I am trying to get to the bottom of why people seem to be so scared of embracing change in the new generation. Only a few neckbeards really care about exclusive games- the best games come out on all consoles- so embrace the future.

it's clear that you are an xbox fanboy - you are defending it when it doesn't need defending.

from what you say here, i assume you have kinect, enjoy it, and are looking forward to full-on kinect integration? (the future!)

and exclusives are generally the best games on a console, for a number of reasons. halo, PGR, forza, metal gear solid, uncharted, wipeout. yeah, who cares about them.

are you trying to downplay exclusives, because they are known as a particular strength of sony?!

It's not about embracing change, it's about the product being relevant to you.

The further it goes in one direction or another, the further it becomes less/more relevant to a group of people.

It seems more like you're dissapointed this thread hasn't descended into a massive trollfest.

It's not about fear. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all own in -house developers. Uncharted, Halo, and Mario aren't exclusives because they lack quality, but because they were specifically designed as selling points for the consoles they're on.
