So I had a really good friend from school who was a genuinely sound guy die the other day. Used to get up to all kinds of mischief but he was just a damn nice guy. I haven't seen him in years as we both moved. He moved to New York and was working as a caddy for Michael Jordan(!). Facebook has of course been filled with send offs. And people reminiscing about him. As a result the local and national press have been pestering everyone for quotes. They have on mass been told to fuck off. But they've gone and taken our quotes off facebook without anyone's permission. The press really are scum.

If it was on a public page they don't need your permission.

They do this with pretty much every story now. It's lazy journalism at best

Copyright still applies though. I haven't looked at Facebook's T&Cs though to see what they claim they can do with your words, and I believe there's some UK equivalent of fair use that this might fall under.

A lot of people I see seem to be really uncomfortable with silence.

I'm not just talking about people chatting away in libraries and such - just generally. Like those who can't seem to exercise or study without music, or experience a lull in conversation without rushing in to fill it up with words.

Weirdly enough, one of the only almost-silent public places I've seen is the rush hour train to work. It's eerie.

(this isn't really a complaint about noise-likers, more of a random observation)

My random thought this morning, how much debt is too much debt?

If you can pay your bills but it is not going down is that ok? Or does it need to be a actively shrinking for it to be ok?

Or just eat cake and not care about it 😃. Waffles are ok also, oh another thought waffles or cake maybe perhaps cookies mmmmmm

If everything stays the same, the right amount of debt is the maximum you can take on that a) you can afford to 'service', ie meet the repayments and interest etc out of ongoing free income, b) debt lenders are prepared to lend you, which usually tallies with a) with a built in dollop of caution, and c) you can actually usefully put to use, as borrowing just to have spare cash is largely a stupid idea.

However, everything does not stay the same, so you also need to factor in what will change going forward. Income might go up and inflation may weigh in, so you can overclock your borrowings now against the assumption they will become trivial in the future (which is what most people do with mortgages). Or you might lose your job, and regret borrowing so much.

tl;dr - borrow as much as you need, with one eye on potential future problems.

This is something I really hate. I'll get to a point in a conversation with someone and there will be a silence and I'll start thinking of something really good to say, when suddenly the other person gets that panicked look on their face and they desperately start talking about the weather or something else equally trivial. Lots of people see a gap in a chat as failure. If someone doesn't have something important funny or interesting to say, then I'd prefer it if they kept their mouth closed :)

Well, now we're on that topic, I do get irritated by people who can't go ten seconds without trying to say something funny, like they're bloody Alan Davies on QI. Even if they are often funny, the constant cracking wise does get very tiresome after a while, at least for me.

Maybe I'm just jealous of funny people or something.

If someone constantly makes 'jokes' then you'll find that most of them aren't funny and it comes across as desperate attention seeking. Oh and Alan Davies is the worst thing about QI and not very funny at all, even though he thinks he is.

You always see and hear about cats hunting and bringing home their prey. I've never actually caught one in the act though.

"Do I look fat in this dress?" is the female equivalent of "How was that for you?" It's a question that you always answer positively unless you want trouble.

I don't hate him, he's there for a reason. But (and I might be making this up) I'm pretty sure there was a least one episode with him, Jo Brand and Johnny Vegas having something of a "stupid-off" for the entirety. Which kinda misses the point when you're on one of the most intellectual entertainment programs* there is.

None of them are as thick as they can pretend to be, but it's not like the "drrrrr-smart-ideas-intimidate-me" crowd aren't appeased by 90% of the rest of television out there.

*In before someone pointing out that it's like, not even that smart etc.
