Why the fuck do window cleaners turn up just when it's about to piss down with rain? Every single time. Total waste of 12.

They likely see that rain is coming and try to get it done asap.

In fairness you could classify 'just about to piss down' as any time between October and April.

They're done every 6 weeks, and even through the summer, sure as eggs are eggs, it will rain shortly after they've been done.

They tend to just latch on to you. Turning up once a fortnight on a Friday demanding a fiver.

I was told an anecdote last week about a startup window cleaner that went around cleaning windows, but left a small square of dirt on the front then put their business card through the door.

    Apparently they've become pretty successful.

As most regs know, I'm not the sort of person to give the Tories a lot of credit. But this has utterly changed my life, and for that I've found myself in the sticky situation where I feel gratitude to David Cameron (shudder) and Iain Duncan Smith (MASSIVE shudder).

If you get laid off, fuck sending god knows how many applications out to companies, seriously. It's bloody scary and it's not for everyone, but really look at being your own boss. Help is there, and if you're hungry for it then you can achieve it.

Well I'm on the scheme atm. You know all the stuff that's been mentioned about me recently on the forum? This scheme really, really helped me out in making that career change a reality. I'd seriously recommend it to anyone looking to start up their own thing and go self-employed. It's a fucking scary move, I won't deny that, but it's bloody worth it.

I have a business mentor for 6 months, with unlimited email contact and up to 3 face-to-face meetings over a six month period. I have access to a startup, government-guaranteed loan of up to 2500 to help me get off the ground. I also have access to higher loans from another company (with slightly stricter criteria) if that's not enough.

Then I have access to tax advice and all that sort of stuff, like setting up business accounts, how to arrange expenses, etc etc. For instance - I bought my Xbox One out of my personal finances. But I can put it through the business by giving it to my company as a loan for the cash amount, which I would then pay back to myself (with me so far?). Any games I purchase can be put through company expenses, and once I'm VAT-registered, I can claim that back too.

I also get a weekly stipend which really isn't much, but is better than going into the fucking job centre every fortnight, which just frankly saps away at your personal dignity.

Fuck 'em all. If they came through with the tax breaks for game developers they promised YEARS before the last election maybe I wouldn't have had to shutter (that one's for you, Matulef) my company a few years back.

Wrong 'uns, one and all. Politicians I mean, not just Tories.

You can probably bet that Keith Vaz had a hand in that. He really seems to have it in for the games industry.

Tom Watson likes to really fuck him up though :D

Nah, it was just an empty promise with no intention to ever make good. Ultimately we just couldn't compete with other firms of a similar size operating in Canada and so we had to throw in the towel.

That and most of our customers went bust when the Global Financial Crisis (tm) hit. :)

Hell no, this is way back in the pre-smartphone days. We only did a small number of iPhone games right at the end but had started back in 2003. Doubt they're even still on the AppStore. :)

\edit: just realised you might think we were 'proper' game developers. Very much not. Mobile, work for hire, licensed games developer. No license too big. No fee too small. :)

I made a case for binning them over the winter but to no avail. Plus, I live by the sea, they really do get minging!

You have to earn something around 60,000 p/a to become VAT registered. You don't charge or claim back VAT before that.

That's not what I've been advised by my mentor. I'll look into it further though, cheers for the heads up.

Right now though I am very much still in the early days with my own thing. I have a site that I'm playing around with right now and which is little more than a glorified portflio site, on top of everything else. But my busines mentor and a couple of other people seem to think that my idea is really good, it just need a degree of refinement when it comes to the finer points in order to make it viable as an ongoing concern.

Edit: I think I misremembered. I looked back over my notes and it looks like you're right.
