Anyone had much success learning a language from home? I've joined an evening class doing spanish - because the french class wasn't running - but I'm a bit concerned about how basic it is for the cost. We are basically going through a textbook with the accompanying CD and repeating phrases. I appreciate the benefit of having a teacher there for correction and people to practice on but I have the CD right here so I'm not sure that in itself justifies £150 (which I haven't paid yet).Pissy pants.

Edit: I've got some Teach Yourself Mandarin CDs sitting about here. I have never played them. Maybe having a teacher is worth something?

This thread is fine as a musings thread. But as soon as it de-generates into another shit-slinging contest then I'll come down on it hard with my mod stick.

The CD isn't what teaches you in a way that you'll be any good at it, being forced to go through it and thinking on the spot (aka practicing with teacher/others) is what makes you learn.
I'll start!

I'm not quite sure what you were expecting from a class though. What you've described is exactly what you should have done at school for any subject. After chasing sunsets one of life's simple joy is playing with the boys
