If there ever was to be a good reason to dump Lovefilm and give Netflix a go, this is probably it:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/01/business/media/netflix-to-deliver-all-13-episodes-of-house-of-cards-on-one-day.html

A whole series available from day 1.

Loved the original (three, I think) series. I didn't get into The West Wing (and probably won't catch up on it) so I'm hoping this delivers the best of both.

Anyone watching it, please do say if it's good. Easy on the spoilers though, please.

You might think that, askew, but I couldn't possibly comment.

I've read that that line makes it into the new series. :)

    \o/

Although if it comes with Spacey's trademark Campy Wobblehead it can do one.

Unfortunately I've never seen the original, or read the book!

How could you not get into The West Wing? The first three seasons are some of the best TV ever made.

Going to check this out later as well. Apparently Netflix also have all the original episodes for anyone that has never seen it.

Original is a tenner on amazon.

And Ian Richardson makes a more convincing Thatcher than Margaret Thatcher - just look at the DVD cover.

Are they re-making it? I loved the first couple of series of it.

Ahh! Try seeing something of the original TV series. Francis Urquhart's arch little asides to the viewer are great.

Been rewatching the original recently, such a good show. Sets a very high bar for this, but will be interesting to see if they get near it.

Although given my crap broadband speeds, I can only hope Sky gets the rights to show it at some point.

I think Spacey is a pretty good choice. I don't think anyone can do the urbane menace that Ian Richardson gave off in the Beeb series, but few actors working right now could come closer.

If you haven't seen the original BBC series, seek it out. The followup ones are good too.

    Quite easily.

The wife tried getting me in to it. We have the box-set sat around somewhere she made me sit down and watch the first few eps. It just didn't gel with me. There's just something about the feel of the thing. I think there's an undercurrent of cheesy American not quite-patriotism or something about it, and it was too *knowingly* smart, as opposed to just actually being smart and getting on with it.

This is great and Spacey is awesome in the role.

Is it a similar format to the UK series? By that, I mean does Spacey talk to the viewer every now and then to tell them what he's thinking?
  • Deleted user 2 February 2013 15:56:29
Not seen the original but he does indeed speak to the viewer now and then which is a risky strategy but Spacey pulls it off. Can't of course compare to he original but I'll have to dig it out.

Watched the first ep, will definitely watch more.

Holy shit the entire season is up. I thought the series was just starting and it would be a once a week thing. That's the rest of my day sorted.

Onto episode 3 already which says a lot about the high standard as I only intended to watch 10 minutes to see what the production quality was like.

Just watched the first two episodes. Bloody brilliant so far.

Didn't have overly high expectations, thought it would be the kind of thing that looked good on paper but turned out a bit shite, especially considering it was Netflix only.

Seriously loving it so far though, only two episodes in so it's got time to turn shit but considering I'm currently watching Louie and Breaking Bad right now, it held me off watching either of them.

So it is an American version of the original then? Saw an advert for it on a bus shelter, and I couldn't work it out - it has the title and an American flag, hence the above question, but no more information as to what it was, other that it would be on on some mythical channel called 'netflix'. New script or a more straight remake?

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Pretty much. Different story, same behaviours.

I understand that the wife plays a much bigger role in this series from the beginning. In the UK version, she's mostly background until the third story.
