Registered 10 years agoThinking about the controller again, have Sony ever had concave sticks?
Might just be bad luck or too much Fifa but the top has comes off the stick on two different controllers. They need to fix that. -

Registered 11 years agoLogitech controllers usually have concave sticks, I thought, as well as the 360 (and original xbox) pads. Nintendo, Sega and Sony sticks have always been convex, as far as I recall (although looking now at a picture of a Saturn 3D control pad, that looks concave to me)

Registered 11 years agoThe difference is quite large, if your thumb is in a cup, you push the stick around, but on a round, you're having to press down on it to pull it around it which is far less comfortable for extended periods.+1 / Like / Tweet this post

This is yer boy here, the original analogue controller released for the PS1:

I think the sticks on the PS3 pad are just the right size, the ones on the PS2 are that wee bit bigger and tiring, while all of Nintendo's sticks leave me with cramp. Curious to why Sony ditched the original sticks now.

Genius bit of marketing if that's the case.
Haha, I just had a thought. I bet vizzini actually believes I get paid by Microsoft to make Sony look like shit. Just like he believes MS paid developers to make worse versions of games for the PS3.XBL: rolemodel86 PSN: Syrette86

Registered 3 years agoIf memory serves correctly, didn't it have a really short production run before theyupgradedchanged to the original Dualshock design?
Only ever messed about with an in store demo, never knew anyone that actually owned one (despite me and all my mates owning PS1s).

As I recall, they were only ever an extra peripheral you could buy, and was only available for a short time before the dualshock came about (and replaced the original controller as the pack-in controller). I'm not sure it even ever came to Europe - I've never seen on of them in the flesh.
Weird, I don't remember those sticks on the PS1 at all.
Apparently, it had another feature, apart from the concave sticks that a good half of eg is still crying out for on current PS pads - ridges on the L and R buttons. Not sure if they were enough to stop your finger slipping off, but at least you'd know when you had.Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Registered 11 years agoWhen I say L and R, I mean L1 and L2 as well as R1 and R2.
Proper analogue L2 and R2 would be nice, but the ability to hit them reliably at all should be a precursor.Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Registered 6 years agoThose analogue sticks on the early Dualshock pic FuzzyDuck posted look very similar to the current ones Microsoft use on their 'upgraded' pads with the swivel d-pad.

My first dual shock came later in a Japanese Import Tekken 3 bundle - which I think was the way Sony first launched the rumble pad.Pre-childish ragequit username - Harry

I didn't see any controllers imported here with GT. The first chance I had to get one was with a Tekken 3 import.
Managed to get a Japanese import of Gran Turismo the month that famous Edge 10/10 was published. I didn't see any controllers offered anywhere and it was an effort to get one of the few imports of just the GT game.
But once I got my Tekken 3 controller it did work with GT.Pre-childish ragequit username - Harry

Registered 7 years agoDumb things are being said by people. Like, "the new Xbox pad breaks in half so it can be used with the new Kinect" dumb. The whole "PS4 1.5x more powerful than 720" comes from the idea the PS4 GPU has that many more pipelines allegedly, but what it actually means practically will likely come down to the implementation of said chip. You can put an awesome GPU in a shitty system, it'll do a lot less than upgrading all the other parts would.
This is the issue with this part of the console cycle: we can get specs and stats and all sorts of crap, and it can or can't be accurate - and it means shit til we see something we understand to make it all make sense, such as footage of a game running on it.
All I want from the next gen is the permanent end of screen tearing, with 1080P over HDMI as standard. That's it. I don't care if it's 30 or 60 FPS, just that it's stable and non-tearing. Things I'd like is some usability of existing pads on at least one system, full Skype integration for Live, a better reason to subscribe to online services than "or else we lock out features that should be standard" (see: cloud saving, web apps), and cloud storing of all saves as standard.
So, quick poll: who thinks Sony will learn their pricing lessons? Who thinks over £500? I'm latter camp. I mean, people buy iPads and laptops and TVs like it's nothing, and I think Sony will see that as enough justification to price high. I think MS will drive to have at least one SKU at £400. -

Registered 7 years agoWhy are we talking about the 90s like they're now? Sony used to be top of the tree in consumer electronics, no question... but that's not the Sony we have now.
They spend too long trading on their reputation rather than R&D. The only thing they're unmatched at now is camera sensors. This post is sponsored by Apple and the iPhone 4S. Think different.
