I've resisted buying a smart phone handset for quite a while but have decided to do it.

I'm reasonably techie and want an unlocked handset for 200-300, pref closer to 200 instead of 300. I have a SIM only deal, 1gig data, 400 mins chat, 3000 txts, so only care about the handset.

Other than that I'm fairly clueless. I've been recommended a Nexus 4, although it's not easy finding one, google play are out of stock...

Samsung Galaxy Note is at the top end of your budget 300ish but is the best phone I have brought. It is big but I can fit it in jeans pockets OK.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. It's the phone I have, which is therefore the best.

Nokia 920 owner here, but that's way out of your price range. If I didn't have this though, I would probably have a Nexus 4 - couple of guys at work have one and it's a superb piece of kit.

I like techy gadgets and stuff and take take great delight in family and friends being unable to equate that with my phone being a Nokia 6230i :-)

The knocks bangs and scrapes that has been through would render a smart phone to a broken handful of electronic bits.

/didn't think of the whores part

Seriously, wait for a Nexus 4. It's the best phone you can get in that price range and arguably the best phone there is.

@mcmonkeyplc Well the specs put it right at the top end of the market- everything from processor and RAM, to screen and build. It's easily competing with the S3 and iPhone 5 for substantially less money.

Add in the fact that it's running stock android which is a thing of beauty these days and guarantees fast updates to new versions for at least the next couple of years and you have one of the best phones on the market.

@mcmonkeyplc Well, essentially yeah :) it doesn't do anything amazing that other phones don't, but if it was 450 it would still be considered a great phone, so I'd say the price is a big deal.

Yeah true but I'm thinking from the point of view of someone who already has an S3...so it's a little different to the OP.

Threads not about me though. :)

Oh yeah, you don't need one, it's one of the best phones you can buy, but so is the S3, it's just not in the OP's price range. Though even if it was I wouldn't recommend it simply because the S4 will probably be out in a few months.

I'm in the same situation as OP and looking at the Nexus 4 as well (when it's back in stock). The relatively low price for the specs is definitely the main pull for me... no matter how much I want an Xperia Z!

What about that Apple phone that's quite popular?

The Xperia Z looks pretty swish and if I was going to buy into anything other stock Android Sony's skin is a pretty good one. But on paper it still doesn't look much better than the Nexus 4 imo and it's sure to cost a lot more.

iPhone 5 is getting a pretty muted response even from many Apple fans. Never really seen the appeal myself but if there was ever a time not to buy the latest iPhone now is it.

Get the iPhone 5 and become a winner.

    Hated, adored, never ignored.

I suspect that most of the phones mentioned(eg samsung/iphone) still don't dropped test well. The original OP will probably expect to drop the phone more than most of you. Non-smartphones, and smartphones from original phone companies were built for purpose.

For someone moving from non-smartphone, I would recommend Blackberry, Nokia, Sony and HTC as the suitable hardware suppliers. Then it is a simple choice between Windows Mobile OS, Lappen OS, Android OS to supply the Apps the OP expects to want.

No most of these phones wouldn't pass the drop test, but you can get some pretty heavy duty cases if that's a concern.
