Has anyone decided who will be setting up some EG regions?

If not I will be setting one up. I'll post today which region I've decided to set up and people can decide which plot they want to take up. We can consider this one of the official EG regions.

One thing I am undecided on though is whether to take one of the 16 city regions or a smaller one with better connectivity.

Take Viridian Woods for example, a fairly pleasant 16 city region:

This region is split into clusters. Four cities per cluster. One Great Works site per cluster. All cities and clusters can trade with the global market via the highway and each other via either highway, rail or sea. But they can only share public services (fire/police/ambulance/trash etc) with the other cities in their cluster, because only cities within the same cluster are linked to each other via the highway. So a city in the northwest cluster cannot offer police coverage to a city in the south east cluster.

Now take a smaller region; Reflection Atoll. A smaller 7 city region:

Only seven cities, and one Great Works site between all cities. However all seven cities are connected by the same railway and highway network; no clusters here. This means all cities can share public services between themselves.

So, as an EG region, what would people prefer?

16 player imo, will be good for the trading and general chit chat.

    I'll be up for both.

Bit harsh but probably fair and pretty much what I've been expecting from everything I've seen and read about the new simcity, it's not for people that have played previous titles in the series because if you start comparing it to them it's going to come out poorly in almost every area.

    I'll take depth over scale.

If you have a key for this you can apparently unlock and play right now now via Singapore VPN.

If you preordered on Origin you are fucked till release date.

how is knowing the names of your residents a good trade off for having a city that can number in the 10's of millions or even the ability to play offline?

It's not about knowing their name.

They wake up, have a shit, go to work, produce tangible products which you can store/sell/supply your commercial district or great work etc. They go to the shops/park on the way home. The real products they make are driven by truck to the shops etc.

You can't just plop down a coal power plant, you have to supply it with coal.

There is a depth in there above and beyond Sim City 4 where cars would just disappear and reappear in an endless cycle.

That Penny Arcade review sounds depressing as a fan of the previous games dating back to SC 2K/SimCopter.

as I said if you've played sim city before this game isn't for you because it doesn't compare favourably to any of the previous titles.

I think this is going down the route of L.A. Noire, despite Rockstar going to great lengths to explain the game to people, there was still a sizeable crowd who were expecting GTA:1947.

SimCity will be the same, its not just a reskin of SimCity 4 with more "teh shiny" but I think some are expecting that.

I do approve of you needing resources to run a coal power plant that is a good change but was sacrificing being able to make an actual city worth it?

That's my issue with the new simcity overall yes they've added a lot of detail to each individual sim but is that actually needed? Wouldn't it of been better to simplify resources to building needs rather than individual needs so you could concentrate on making a city management game rather than a small town management game?

Or to put it simply wouldn't it of been better to make a sequel to simcity 4 rather than making a sims:town game?

I can see this Sim City being the basis for expansion in both directions, so that The Sims can eventually plug into Glassbox on one scale, and for SimCity to expand in detail on the other.

I agree, I'm looking forward to this. I even quite enjoy watching other people play it on YouTube. What a loser.

It must have carried over from some EA game when I was about 15. Oh well.

edit: From what I can gather if you have a key from a source other than Origin you can load up a Hong Kong or Singapore VPN and activate.

Is GreenMan the cheapest for the downloadable version? Trying to decide whether or not to cancel my Amazon order.

I wasn't sure about this at first, more of a Civ man than Simcity (although I remember mucking about with the original back in the mists of history).

But I've watched a few videos and I'm sold on it now, looking forward to how the multiplayer stuff works out.
