New Region just started on Europe West 3. Region is called Santana. It's open to the public and I'll also invite people if anyone is looking for a region to play in.

Every time I see a forumite say "I'm enjoying it so far, it's really addictive" I'm reminded of all the reviews (for example, EG's) that said something like "It's really addictive and at first you'll just love it, but then you start to notice how shoddy pretty much everything is and you realise how soul-less and dull it is".

Makes it hard to really take any good word-of-mouth about the game seriously. Reading the posts of those who I know have been playing a while it does seem to have turned into a premium version of Ikariam - "have you got Resource X? I need resource Y, but I'm overflowing with Resource Z, nothing will work until I shift that and get some of Y and turn it into X" and so on.

That's not the SimCity game I want to play :(

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

That's cos they're all playing it multiplayer which I still don't think is the best way to play it.

Setting up multiple cities in your own that all work properly together are it's strength, especially as they improve the game with each patch.

The size isn't a massive issue anyway, the likes of Anno seem to have far smaller play areas.

That's not really true, Anno has huge islands you can settle on.

I find the size an issue. The regions are a nice idea, but just don't work properly as it is. It's ok for a few simple things, but commuting etc. is just broken. I would much prefer bigger cities.

That said, I still really like the game, and purely from the "observation fun" factor, it's at the top in the genre. That's also why I really wouldn't call it "soulless".

FWIW, the reason I always preferred SC to Anno is that a lot more happens and develops independently in Sim City. In Anno, you have to place every single house by hand, and best you can hope for is that it gets upgraded twice. In Sim City, you can leave the PC for a an hour and the city will look differently when you return. :)

I've never played Anno, but it looks pretty nifty. More like Caesar than SC, imo.

I know this is the SC thread, but can anyone point me toward the best DRM-free version of Anno?

    Some info on Space Centres
Ta for that, but none of it seems to apply to my city :-(

    Mayors can schedule rocket launches,
Where?, I can't see any controls that let me do that.

Rocket launches are scheduled similarly to events at the Expo Center or Pro Stadium, drawing in tons of tourists to the connected cities eager to witness the launch
How? Clicking on the Space Centre has no effect. No controls on the great work page, just a spinning disc and a smiley face that tells me that I'm benefitting to the tune of 0 Tourist :-(

An increase in tourism boosts the profits of your city’s commercial buildings,
Nope, my minimal commercial are closing down due to a lack of trade.
Not surprising given the shaky start they've had. Wonder if it needs patching/ has been turned off/ down for 'performance' reasons. It's a lot of money and resources to spend if you get no benefits.

Might have a go at building one in my SP game. I've got a tourist city already, just need a Uni as the last one had a bit of an 'accident' :(

My Ore mine is nearing its end soon so I'll plonk a Uni on that and see if the Tourism picks up.

Bit of a bonkers thing though if you need intelligent citizens in order to attract tourists, haven't the devs ever been to Blackpool?

1404 was the best one, imo, but they're all good, although personally I wouldn't pick one of the older ones over the shiny new ones just because of DRM. Don't know about DRM-free anyhow, I'll let you find that out for yourself. ;)

I was hoping you'd say 1404 - it looks like the one I'd enjoy most! :)

Ubi's DRM doesn't seem quite as bad with Anno, so I guess I can live with it.

    Right, so....

I've run out of water WTF am i supposed to do now (other than a rain dance)?

My pumps are on what was the biggest blob of water. the minimal amount that's left is either on contaminated ground, unbuildable ground or both!

That's the exact point where I packed it in. I couldn't supply most parts of my city. It was completely dry and I had none to buy from neighbours.

I think it's safe to say we won't see any more positive reviews of the game. Either EA pissed everyone off so much that they won't risk their reputation on a positive review, or the game is really that bad!

The theme seems the same, though: Good game buried under a mountain of garbage.

One of the main things they need to address is the water shortage problem. Everyone seems to run out of water extremely fast. They need to allow it to replenish underground faster and coastal regions should get a desalinization plants so the region never runs dry.
Regarding sticking your water plant next to sewage, I tried it and everyone got sick even with a filter.

You need to change the basic water plant.

    Plop the water plant.

    Add the Filtration addition.

Delete the Basic Pump part of it.

It works, I've got three filtration plants next to my sewage works, you get an endless supply of water.
