If you want to give something like this a go now all you need is this and a PS3 controller

You just bought something even worse, so you I thought you would have been well up for it.

Totally depends on the price. If it's cheap enough i'll get one but i don't like many of the games on my One X so another Tegra based device will need to do something pretty special for me to be interested.

If it means i can play games on my upstairs PC while i'm sat in the living room watching tele with my housemates then i might be more interested. But then we have the whole lag issue that put everyone off OnLive.

Let's not forget it's a very capable android device on it's own.quad core CPU, 72 core GPU, vanilla Android

Reminds me of an Xbox Duke pad crossed with one of those PSOne screens you could buy.

I don't need it though. I'm obviously not the primary market. I'm a PC gamer with a decent smartphone, consoles and a DSi for handheld stuff. The only attraction to me is to use it as a slingbox for my PC games upstairs.

It's going to be an interesting year with Ouya, Shield and the other Android devices coming out.

I know I keep on banging this drum, but this is another little glimpse into the future of gaming, but in a very retarded limited by current tech way.

Imagine this being a cloud gaming device and yeah, now you're talking.

Who wants to pay $349 (and probably 349) for one of these? Now don't all rush to pre-order at once.

Nvidia Gizmondo would have been a better name.

That will only be the case when they can solve battery life issues. Most every phone has charge for a few days at best so having a gaming platform with all the other shit attached too just seems impossible to achieve until they devise a new way of powering the things.

Me! At most it'll be 299. I wouldn't pay any more than that though. I really want one!

I'm more interested in if i whack an nvidia card in my PC and my laptop has an nvidia card in it, whether i can replicate the streaming.

    now that would be ace.

I liked the look of this but then I read somewhere that this is only compatible with Nvidia 6 series cards which kills it dead for me.

I got a 560ti which is still a beast of a card and wont need upgrading for a while, dunno why the fuck there limited to 6 series , a scam to get people to upgrade for no reason.

It requires the H.264 encoder chip that's part of the 600 series and above.

Really can't see this doing well at all with its price tag.

The 600s have an extra video encoder chip in them. As a 570 owner, this kills it for me too as I'm waiting for maxwell to upgrade - though THFourteen's idea would make a 700 series card more appealing when they are released.

I like it in principle and the geek in me does fancy one but the only real use for it for me would be in bed as I can't do much gaming on the integrated graphics upstairs. Seeing as I'll be getting another PC in year or so once the next gen dust settles my current PC will move upstairs anyway meaning zero need for this sadly. 300 notes for 10 minute crapper gaming is a bit much.

    Nice little gadget though.

I have a 680 card, a dual band wifi (2.4 & 5GHz) network, a number of unplayed games that fully support big picture mode in Steam and would only give this a go if I got one for free and even then it would probably be played a couple of times and then left to collect dust. I really can't see who this is targeted at.

The actual controller looks very uncomfortable.

Just a word of warning to anyone eyeing one of these, the preview below says the main pull of PC streaming is actually launching as a beta and will only work with select games.

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/14/4329008/nvidia-shield-price-specs-release-date-preorders-begin-hands-on-preview

Seems a bit pointless now :)

I like the idea of streaming games to a laptop. I used to stream the odd game to my ipad using that splashtop remote desktop, which actually worked better than you would expect. Something like that but streamlined for games would be excellent. Then you can have a powerhouse PC with the mobility of a laptop

Its strange but i find the streaming quality to ipad much better than to laptop using splashtop.

ipad is hard to control, but the games are almost lag-free IMO. stuff like FM and civ were very playable

I think of the nVidia shield in the same way that Jeff Goldblums character thought of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park
