    Ridiculous.

A knighthood should be only handed out for the highest achievements in life. Things like a member of the military single handedly saving their squad from certain death.
A person who has dedicated their lives to helping others.
To a person who has made advances to our culture or way of life, perhaps through great scientific work.

Not someone who can ride a push bike for hours on end faster than anyone else.

Some papers saying mo should be too, what he won a couple of running races.

    It says a lot.

    I, bluntly, don't care.

In fact it says it all when Wiggins himself doesn't sound like he cares too much either.

It's a positive thing and well done to all involved. But like the monarchy, it doesn't really matter much to Joe Public.

They aren't getting actual peerages are they? It's a KBE, which is like the 5 Gold Star badge at McDonald's (compared to MBE, OBE, CBE). It's awarded for achievement and / or service. Wiggins achieved a lot this year.

I think they are all nominated by the Prime Minister's office. There are loads of them, twice a year. Don't think you get to sit in the House of Lords or anything.

I think part of growing up is realising that what you thought of as "new bullshit" is often actually old bullshit. In this case, really, really old bullshit.

Is it still the case that only men can get knighted?

At the end of the day all of these people have achieved SOMETHING with their lives, you may not agree with how they have been acknowledged but instead of moaning about it, why not go and achieve something with your own life instead?

Aside from their sporting achievements, I think it's more to do with the fact that these sportspeople inspired Average Joe and made them feel they could achieve greatness - obviously never gonna happen but you never know, perhaps Fruit could be taking gymnastic gold in Rio in 4 years.

Think you'll find if anyone's devalued knighthoods this year it's Jimmy Savile.

The bars are slightly different to the ones he's used to, I'd wager.

Theoretically speaking though, would the floor routine be set to 'Show Me The Way To Go Home'?

I found out today that Martha Lane Fox had been given something for some reason or other. That'll be the woman that could only make money by launching an internet company during the dot-com boom which promptly crashed and got bought out for the bragging rights when the world righted itself. Since then she's apparently done nothing of note beyond self promotion, says wikipedia. That'll be worth rewarding then.

It makes sense that a potential military position like a jouster be young and fit. Wiggins is perfect.

Knighthoods were given out by the King or Queen for exceptional skill/ability/position in war.

Over the years the size of the British Empire, power of the Monarchy and relevance of conventional warfare have all waned.

Therefore the system has naturally evolved towards more peacetime achievements.

All the mentions in the OP are deserving of an award, and people like this do get recognised. However a single heroic deed in battle (like saving your squad as in the OP) will be rewarded with a medal like the Victoria Cross over a Knighthood.

Either way it has to be relevant to the field/industry. If you are the best in your field then you deserve to be recognised. Most of the athletes have MBE/OBE/CBE. A Knighthood (KBE) is usually only given out after a long (or life) time of achievement.

That's what the Victoria Cross is for. You want to downgrade them to a Knighthood that any bent politician or dodgy businessman can get?

Like emerging victorious as the best in your sport.
Things like a member of the military single handedly saving their squad from certain death.
Nope, that's what Victoria's Crosses are for.
A person who has dedicated their lives to helping others.
You shouldn't need honouring or recognition for your good deeds.
To a person who has made advances to our culture or way of life, perhaps through great scientific work.
Perhaps the recognition from your peers would be more important than an honour in front of a public who don't understand/care about what exactly you did, because Tim Berners-Lee still isn't a household name despite the KBE.
Not someone who can ride a push bike for hours on end faster than anyone else.
Exactly this type of person really, someone who competed against the world for two decades, emerging victorious time and again while wearing the national flag with pride and inspiring countless people in the process.
Some papers saying mo should be too, what he won a couple of running races.
    See above.
    It says a lot.
And yet, says nothing at all.

The best thing about honours is it allows people to refuse to take them. There's some great names in this list
