:D I've got the steam version, so it's there taunting me every time I browse my library.

@ DM, yeah I have that version and it's another joypad friendly game so....

I thought Mafia 2 was awesome..

    anyway..

The graphics on Borderlands are shite. Cell shading is terrible and they should just get over themselves and put a decent looking game together.

Assassins Creed is nothing more than regular game breaks every 30 seconds and is just as frustrating as Skyrim to play, then pause, then play, then pause, then play then pause then zzzzzzzz..........

    NBA2K13 is the GOTY.

I liked Mass Effect 3's ending, more so after the Extended Cut, which I didn't think was wholly necessary in the first place.

I liked that it was dystopian, thus somewhat unique, for a videogame.

The entitled gamer outcry was an embarrassment for a medium striving for credibility among the other accepted storytelling artforms.

Borderlands is not cel-shaded. It's sketched.

My unpopular opinion is that no matter how highly esteemed a game is I can't play it if it's turn-based.

Mario only chases after Princess Peach as a cover story for his and Luigi's red hot incestuous love affair.

Have to go with Dale on this one. I have always liked the cell shading in games. On that note I was playing XIII the other day, excellent game

    No it isn't.

Also for someone that gets bent out of shape by Americanisms I'm surprised to see you write something like "same difference".

I loved XIII. Was gutted when it didn't get it's intended sequel. It did an excellent job of conveying a comic book aesthetic.

So what is the difference then, as a genuine question?

To me, Borderlands 2 just looks like cel-shading but with a few texture and filter effects placed on top to make it look even more like a comic book (not meaning that as a way to say it looks bad, as it looks great to my eyes).

If there's something intrinsically different going on that I can't see I am genuinely interested in knowing about it.

This is cel shading, also commonly known as toon shading.

Borderlands is 'shaded' just like any other game (more or less), it's just that the textures are heavily stylised.

Now that's what I call an unpopular opinion! :)

For me, it was without exaggeration probably the worst game I've bought in the last 10 years.
i thought it was pretty decent. not great, but had some good times co-oping through the harder difficulties.

the sequel, red river, is much worse. imagine dragon rising, but with a levelling system, no encounters further than 50m away (in dragon rising you were dead if they got anywhere near 100m), and the most risible NPC ever shouting at your CONSTANTLY.

it has the most baffling ending, with shouty man briefly calming down to explain the horror of war. i should point out that he spends the previous 20 hours greeting every death with racist glee.

anyway, my unpopular(?) opinion is that skyrim is absolute dogshit anti-gaming. there's a brief few hours where the combat is nicely balanced, and your skills mean something, but everything after is just a mindless trudge. i spent over 100 hours on it because i have OCD, apparently.

Did you miss that article that showed a screenshot of Borderlands before the art-style change? Here's what it would have looked like:-

    http://images.eurogamer.net/2012/articles//a/1/5/1/5/3/6/9/eurogamer-kp1hfr.jpg

Not many unpopular opinions here have the opportunity of seeing things as they would have preferred...is this better, or do you think Borderlands would have had bad art either way?

JRPGs are uniformly terrible, and everyone I've ever met who has been in to them is a crushing bore.

So Cel-shading is a tech term rather than a style one? I always considered it to be interchangeable myself.

@Mr-Brett I thought in cel-shading the surfaces that make up each object don't have any texture, just a single colour, which can get gradations due to lighting effects. In Borderlands surfaces do have textures, but these are hand-drawn rather than photographed, imported and adjusted.

Judging by the Readers Poll my most unpopular gaming opinion is that Dishonored is a crushingly dull game that I can't even gather the enthusiasm to play past the second mission.

All the eurogamers who actually play with each other on xbl rather than just post pseudointellectual pc handwringing bollocks on the forums, love the shit out of biggy.

Each "cell" is shaded a uniform colour. That is my understanding of cell shaded.

Yep, purely technical. These things have a habit of getting misconstrued when the games media hears these terms and latch on to them without fully understanding the meaning. We'll start to see shaders in the style of borderlands soon enough though. they just won't be cel shaders. There are tech demos of cross hatch shaders online if you're interested.

Anyway that's enough technical stuff, any more and vizzini might appear and bullshit up the thread.

I always considered borderlands to be cell shaded. I love the look of it, whatever the technical term for it is.

Cel shaded might as well just mean 'looks like a cartoon' for most people. Anything else and you're just being pedantic. :)

Ok more technical stuff then :p

    @fogheart & @Skuzzbag
You'd have to look that stuff up, I'm no expert but I believe you're both pretty much right, I don't think the presence of a texture is important though.

    @disusedgenius
Fair enough, Borderlands looks more like a comic though so it's not cell shaded! Ha, I win! YES! ;)
