This is it really. There is this sentiment that the Dreamcast is better than the PS2, but if I was to take one and only one of either machine, it would be the PS2 every time.

Of course the short lifespan doesn't help the Dreamcast's case.

The graphics genuinely weren't "all that" though.

They were good, but the amount of the "oh my god that's the best thing I've ever seen" bollocks from people just proved how many people had obviously not set foot near a PC game for the last five years.

    Texture work was iffy too.

I'm more inclined to say that Uncharted's visual beauty and illusion of reality has a lot more to do with its superlative lighting and animation systems.

Yeah agreed. But in the context of every ps3 version of cross platform games running at 15 fps, throw the dog a bone :D

@RobTheBuilder I preferred that though. Made it more fun for me. A little easier perhaps but I really found it to be the best in the series. Paradise was the huge step backwards though.

This thread is bollocks. I suspect that's a popular opinion.

@convercide it made it seem more chaotic and exciting at first, but it reduced the long term replayability and quality.

Sort of related to how Uncharted does a good job of fooling people into thinking it's a lot more graphically sophisticated than it is, what's with the cave hate in gaming?

It's easy to to point to a postcard-pretty vista and say "see, that's GORGEOUS" because everyone likes pretty postcard vistas.

Caves are more challenging though. They're dark, pretty boring and inherently surrounded by slabs of stone in shades of grey and brown and we are sort of hardwired to dislike them.

Any third rate graphic artist or engine can make a pretty attractive forest/jungle vista. Making a pretty cave though? Now THAT's something impressive.

You're such a fucking spastic DM. Really. Can you not create another group and go and hide in it for another 6 month instead of posting you're undiluted spastic in every single thread on the forum.

I hate saying stuff like that, but fucking hell you're annoying.

Uncharted 2 was absolutely gorgeous. Surpassed many times now of course, but there really wasn't a lot better looking at the time.

    And it's "its".

    Whoops, edited now!

Fighting games aren't really my think so I will have to trust you on that one. You could argue it's another genre like JRPGs that haven't really evolved for 20 years so the old classics still stand up well to modern games

I remember being agog at many a point in that game and I did have a gaming PC too. I think its main feature was knowing how to use its graphics to great effect, rather than like Crysis that dumped a load of technology on you but had little flair bar a few sections.

Playing Planetside 2 is the first time I've had that mouth open "what am I playing!!" sensation of wonder since Uncharted 2. Actually Metro 2033 recently too, the opening of that is stunning but I haven't delved any further into it than the intro.

Planetside isn't particularly pretty but the sheer scale of it and the number of people on screen is jaw dropping at times.

Wow and I thought I was the only one in the entire world who thought this. Uncharted 2 was very cartoony and the game was ultra linear anyway so it wasn't that much of achievement. Red Dead redemption was very impressive and I thought looked much better than any Uncharted game which is an actual achievement since it was multiplatform and open world.

This is, in a nutshell, what I was getting at.

The game is frequently gorgeous, but that's as much down direction, lighting, camerawork and level design as it is beating you over the head with amazing technology uses.

Batman Arkhum Asylam looked better than UC2 and came out a few months before. I also think Arkhum City looks miles better than UC3.

I didn't like Ocarina of Time.
Even at the time I thought the graphics were wank and I didn't like the controls.
Link to the past is one of my favorite games ever though.

It's the age old art direction beats a fancy engine thing really, nothing more. Gameplay wise, yeah I definitely agree Uncharted isn't all that. At all. It's a cover shooting game with a light bit of Tomb-Raider style puzzles and spatial navigation and takes its presentation from pulp adventure stories and Indiana Jones. It's very very well put together, and I agree they are good games, but the daft declarations that they are the best thing since sliced bread are just daft, but as was mentioned earlier I suppose PS3 fanboys need to take whatever bone they're thrown ;-)

@darkmorgado I was honestly going to say that if Uncharted didn't have the great graphics and wasn't exclusive then no one would give a toss as the gameplay is as average as it gets but you got there before me.

    I only own a PS3 btw.

So do I. I get accused of being a Ninty/MS/Sony/PC fanboy so often it's funny considering I own and use all of them, love all of them and also criticise all of them.

Admittedly the bulk of my console gaming is done 360 though, but only because I find the pad in general more comfortable.

lol if your gonna say I'm wrong then at least have the evidence to prove me wrong. I played both Uncharted 2 and Batman Arkhum Asylum on release and was alot more impressed graphically with Batman than Uncharted.

Also the combat in Uncharted is a joke. Its like they ripped it out from a PS2 game whereas Batman Arkhum Asylum's combat is probably THE best combat I've played in a game.

This is the Unpopular Opinions thread.

Demands for evidence are sort of silly.
