HL2, for me, is all about the setting and atmosphere. More of an FPS adventure to me, rather than a shooter. The combat does its job, it might be inferior to other shooters (the AI was certainly inferior compared to the first game) but that's not the reason for why I played and enjoyed it.

I actually find a lot of Valve games suffer from really bad pacing. Half Life, HL2, Episode 1 (my God, that game was a drag), Portal 2 (the middle section of that game completely slumps) and even Portal 1. Even though it only lasts about 90 minutes I thought the test chambers before the final two or three should have been longer or more challenging. Most of them can literally be worked out and even completed in about 30 to 60 seconds.

I do really like Valve on the whole, but they're not without fault.

I'm going to defer to John Carmack for opinions on Valve games, fuck it I'll defer to him on everything. He is a rocket scientist after all, how could he ever be wrong?

@Mr-Brett there's no arguing with facts, is there?

@andytheadequate I know BF SP is atrocious, but I think MP is worse than that. And with Wrecked I meant local MP only. Still better than any other game is either local or online.

@joeymoto108 I came to the conclusion by playing it a few hours and being bored the shit out of by it. Throwing random stuff around was pretty much the most entertaining part imo.

@Syrette I don't quite understand how you come to that conclusion, although I admit that one was really just more stupid polemic than my actual opinion.

Valve games are an absolute joy for me. Far and away my favourite dev. Horses for courses and that.

My issue with HL2 was the story. There seemed to be virtually no continuation from the first game.

It dumps you in the game with no explanation of what's going on, why you're fighting the combine, who they are or why you should care. All that would be fine if it was gradually explained to you. But it isn't. Unless I missed something. Which is possible.

Yeah. I think the writing in Half Life is bunk.

    @Pumpatron

I think it's never explained. My guess is they started the HL2 project as something more Half-Lifeish, but during the course of development moved farther and farther away, because they had all those fancy ideas and were fascinated with George Orwell or whatever.

I think it's pretty common that a game in development ends as something completely different from what it began as.

It had its moments for sure. A lot of it was shite though, and it had zip to do with it being old fashioned.

I think "It had its moments" is what already sets it apart from most current FPS games.

Honestly I found DNF the most fun and fresh FPS I played in a long while, probably because it doesn't try to be COD and didn't take itself seriously. A real nod back to when FPS were actually fun to play.

It is explained, but to be fair it's easy to miss. It's almost all pieced together by background details, newspapers clippings on the wall, overheard conversations etc etc.

Ah, sounds like I did miss something then. Still, it's poor story telling. They're pretty much leaving it to chance whether or not you understand who you're fighting and why etc.

I should probably pickup the orange box and give it another playthrough.

Also, just watched the intro sequence. Doesn't explain anything really, it's just a bit of cryptic nonsense.

Yeah. I think Ghost Town's is about as good as anything I've played in an FPS for a long time, and I loved hopping around on burger buns.

The swimming missions on the otherhand...

The ending of HL2 is utter gash as well.

The Monkey Island series are nowhere near the best point and click games ever made and are nowhere near as funny as their reputation suggests.

And Curse of Monkey Island was the best in the series.

Hate to add this one, but Id hasn't made anything worth playing since Quake 3.

Got another one: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a bag o' shite with its rubbish A.I., bulletsponge enemies, poorly designed levels and highly unsatisfying shooting mechanics. One would think this ought be popular opinion but this thing was a fekkin' commercial success...

Hmm, I think you made a typo there Dirtbox as you obviously meant to hit '2' rather than '3'.

I think games may be a contributing factor in some killing sprees. I can see how they could feed certain individuals unhealthy obsessions with weapons.

You would have to be deluded to disagree with this.

Oh and there hasn't been a good zombie game since Resident Evil 4.
