I find DS a strange beast. I can be quite a casual player of games - I won't play fighting games as I don't like learning lists of moves or getting to know the nuances of a character, driving sim games I quickly lose the thrall, MMO's alienate me as my patience to endure the bedding quickly fades... yet this... this I happily sat down and set out to defeat, footstep by footstep and enjoyed every moment.

I agree to some degree, they have taken away a great deal of micro-management and this has meant the game loses some of its appeal to me, it should be all about micro-management. I recently started playing Civ 5 and the game seemed to be primarily a case of pressing end turn.

Of course, I could play it in the traditional way but there is no real bonus for doing that and I need boundaries to stop me from taking the easy option!

You are a factory of sadness.

They had excellent ideas with Alpha Centuri, then more in Alien Crossfire and then promptly forgot all that and made Civ3.

Activision did more interesting things with their Call to Power games than Firaxis has so far.

The only thing wrong with Civ2 is that some of the wonders are too powerful. Great Library + Leonardo's Workshop = Win. I'd rate it as my favourite otherwise.

3 was just wrong somehow. 4 was just *all* about the micromanagement, rush building and stacking units. There wasn't actually a game there.

Civ5 is very much Civ Lite, but I quite like it.It's like the strategy equivalent of ambient music. That and a glass of wine and radio 4 in the background, I'm as happy as a pig in shit.

I suspect I need to play it on a higher level and go for the long game as well as being a war monger. As it was I was playing the scientific victory and it was pretty dull really. In fact, I think I'm going to do that now.

I would also say global warming was a problem. All of your work turned to shit in an instant.

Out of saints row 1, saints row 3 and a bug steaming pile of poo, I think I would rather play with the poop. I really don't get the hype and I really don't get how people say they prefer it to the gta games.

Amen to that. I played through SR3 at the insistence of the lodger and partly to see if I could find something positive to say about it (I guess maybe the vehicle handling was just on the right side of ok), but everything about it screamed "cynical box ticking exercise" to me.

I don't believe there are really that many who prefer SR to GTA. It only feels that way because the few who do are loud and annoying about it. If everyone who liked GTA more than SR said something, we'd never hear the end of it.

They don't have to, though, because it's a given.

UGO: I love Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

a lot of SH fans disliked it. to me it was great and consider it a fresh blood to the tired series.

Here comes a big one. Half-Life 2 is a great tech demo, but not a great game.

There's too little health and ammo, enemies take too long to kill, and with the ever-present instadeath on top, the greatest part of the game consists of quicksave/quickload, ruining anything that you could remotely call game flow. Lost too much health? Quickload. Took too much ammo? Quickload. Didn't go perfectly well for another reason? Quickload. Really, that's shoddy.

Also, many "chapters" like driving or speedboating, or the follower missions, or the defence missions etc. are MUCH longer than they are fun, becoming a tedious chore for the greatest part. I cancelled more than one playthrough after I just couldn't be arsed anymore to finish that crap.

This is one of the few games that's actually more fun with cheats. And that's not good. HL3 will have to be radically changed to convince me.

And about the Saints Row topic, I loved the character creation of SR3 but found the rest of the game pretty dull and boring. GTA 4 is a LOT better, including the vehicle physics, because they're not so simplified and arcadey as in SR3.

This thread has taught me that Half Life 2 isn't as popular as I thought. There seem to be plenty of reasons to dislike it.

Yeah, I had some real difficulty with that one too, until I learnt summoning another player is literally your best friend. There was one charming fellow I summoned who was wearing a loin cloth and wielding a sword with a blade about the size of a small child and proceeded to wtfpwn Capra and his canine pals. It took some of the satisfaction away I must admit but I also found it strangely theraputic watching capra being handed his spleen.

    @Raiko101

Right, I should have read at least the first pages of this thread. I think I~ll read through the whole thread now, such an unusual amount of good judgement in here.

Did I mention that the facial animations of HL2 were pretty spectacular back then, but the behaviour of NPCs, especially the women, was unnatural to the point of creepy?

And did I mention I never ever want to hear "Gordon" or "Freeman" again?

Half-Life 1 is solely responsible for the death of classic FPS with interesting level structure, and the rise of cinematic linear corridor shooters, and for that it shall burn in hell.

I'll agree that Half Life 2 was way overated, as was the first. Okay games, but I never got the love for them.

The best FPS series of all time is still No One Lives Forever.

A Link to the Past is the best Zelda game ever.

There was way too much BLAH BLAH BLAH in Ocarina of Time.

Games with stories is like porn with stories.

Dark Souls is for babies. Try R-Type 3.

Battlefield MP sucks even more than SP, making it worse than CoD.

Crysis 2 is better than 1.

    Q3A was better than UT.

Wrecked: Revenge Revisited is by far the best current-gen multiplayer game, only rivalled by last-gen predecessor Mashed. Both are infinitely superior to any karting game ever.

Amnesia is boring. All horror games are boring.

Duke Nukem Forever is better than most other FPS games of recent years.

Nintendo World Cup is more fun than Fifa.

NfS Most Wanted (2012) has nice graphics, everything else about it is complete shit.

Games are a waste of time.

I thought HL2 was brilliantly atmospheric and has rarely been surpassed in this regard. Judged in terms of combat though, extremely average. The physics "puzzles" didn't really bother me as it was pretty early in terms of games with believable physics. Played it through again fairly recently with the FakeFactory mod, still atmospheric, but the physics bits have dated more than anything else.

Deffo brought out the absolute worst PC fanboys at the time though. They'd have you believe there was no point playing anything else back then it was so far ahead of everything else. Hmmmm no.

BF single player better than its single player? What are you on? Fair enough not liking multiplayer but the single player is atrocious.

Duke nukem forever is just awful with no redeeming features.

Wrecked is brilliant local multiplayer, but online simply doesn't work. Unplayable due to lag and crashing your console, and when someone does get disconnected because their console crashed, it kicks everyone out of the game. How it ever passed certification I do not know, this happens 2/3 of games in 4 player mp

Amnesia is far from boring. How'd you manage to jump to that conclusion?

'Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?'
