Good achievements challenge you to replay the game in a different way to what you're used to (Orange Box) or explore more content or story (Witcher 2) but yes, most of the time they are useless.

My favourite achievement was jumping off the tower in crackdown. I wa new to the 360 and landing in the water only to find it unlocked an achievement was a lovely moment to warm me to the machine.

I spent ages trying to get all the achievements for Marble Blast Ultra and got stuck on getting the last level in the short time after getting all the other achievements. It really fucked me off and I can trace back my hatred of achievements to that one miserable afternoon.

Some are just stupid. There was one on FIFA 06 that was like 'win 50 online games in a row'... Ridiculous.

Good ones are great though. Good game design counts here as much as in game.

The Super Stardust HD trophy set had some interesting ones in, but that and the 100% on Fallout 3 were the only ones I put some concerted effort into.

Agreed, one of my favourite gaming experiences was getting to the top of the tower for the first time, then jumping into that pool. Crackdown is still one of my favourite games, ever.

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 had some good achievements. Completing every campaign on the hardest setting is something worth boasting about. Still missing that achievement in L4D2 because I died on a campaign as the credits were fading in. :(

I do make a point not to go for achievements when the game isn't that good. I want people to see I haven't bothered with it. However, I have been dragged into playing through a couple of games I didn't really enjoy, just to be social.

@SuperCoolEskimo that WILL be unpopular! I don't think it's crap, but maybe a little overrated.

Also, 'collect 3000 of these' achievements are fucking horrendous and anyone bundling them into their game to feign longevity should be culled.
Completely agree. If you're likely to get them just in the normal course of play, then it's not so bad. If you have fucking farm the game repeatedly to get it then it's just lazy fucking filler to keep people playing.

Too Human was really guilty of this. So is Gears of War and the Seriously achievements in each fucking game.

Crackdown, and to some extent Dead Rising are the two best examples I can think of where Achievements are really done well. Halo games usually have a pretty good list as well.

Metal Gear Online was the most fun online multiplayer game ever. 300 hours gametime well spent.

Metal Gear Solid would be a lot better without Hideo Kojima writing it.

Trophy hunting and going out of your way to get 1000g gamerscores in stuff is just tragic, for sad cunts and is embarrassingly spergy.

More so if you don't actually like the game.

Read a book, go for a walk, write an essay on how fucking abysmal your life is that you have to cheevo hunt "Mediocre-Dungeon-Hack-Hack-Man 3" when you're bored rather than doing pretty much any fucking other thing.
Best post ever. Achievements can die.

This ffs. It would be just another dull spy fest that no one would care about if it didn't have the mad bastard kojima holding the reigns. It would be fucking splinter cell. Urgh.

Yeah, that's an achievement done well, but you'd jump off the tower anyway. So achievements, at their best, are pointless.

I think Kojima needs a writing partner. Somebody to reign him in when he takes things too far. The whole Liquid Snake arm on Ocelot thing was just woeful. One of the most cringe-worthy moments in gaming.

I don't mind achievements, I just hate seeing people play shit/mediocre games to get them. Or playing good games to the point of desperation. It's embarrassing as a gamer. I also reckon it won't be long before achievements are the sole test for aspergers.

His collaborative efforts have generally been pretty poor imo. I wouldn't want to see him hampered by anyone getting too caught up in the science of body part possession.

    @King_Edward But it's still good:

    1. If you do it anyway it's nice to be rewarded for it with points

    2. If you see the achievement and do it, then it sets an in game task with a reward for doing it

Good either way, how achievements should be done

"I'm buying this game for machine x because of trophchievements" is one of saddest things I've seen.
