Haha, he's amazing. Dust in you case doesn't cause more power drain, it causes less efficient cooling. Maybe a watt or two more with the extra drag on the fans, but not 150+. And DEFINITELY not 300.

    Move along.

PC threads are better than the console threads now.

My rig has an overlocked i7, two sli cards, two blu ray drives and a usb coffee warmer. I use this to power it:

Once you've installed it all and hopefully booted to windows, run MSI Kombustor and Prime 95 all at the same time. If you don't BSOD or the computer doesn't shut off or hang, you're fine.

I assume you're familiar with Prime 95 since you have a moderate overclock anyway.
Frankly when I build/oc a pc I know prime will crash it after my tweaks.  Stable during gaming but crash during prime, perfect oc. I live on the edge oh yeah*

*not to be used as advice because is a really bad idea, but I love to fiddle.

We used to have a guy like Vizzini in our engineering team. It's a fucking nightmare. Basically these are people that have lost confidence in themselves/technology in general, so they are constantly asking what if this breaks? What if that fails. Shouldn't we increase the size of... whatever. They are the reason projects end up costing twice as much as they should.

    Well according to bit-tech.net

The two GPUs will use 512 watts at load (256wattx2), the i5-2500k clocked at just 3.3Ghz at load uses 148watts.

So that is 660watts without HDDs or anything else (unless I'm reading things wrong). An extra 700Mhz overclock on each core will also use more power.

    It is a 700watt supply. 700 -660 = 40watts.

Is bit-tech's info wrong? or does it really have 150watts headroom like you claim?
Yes, it's absolutely wrong. Try http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp or quite literally any other on the internet. Or just admit that I can do it in my head at a glance without having to look up every tiny thing and still not know what you're talking about.

Whatever happened to Curly Watts off Coronation Street?

if you have nothing intresting to say then you might as well just throw your bags on the truck and drive away

How many Curly Watts do you need to run two GTX 690s in SLI?

What the fuck is there to disagree about vizzini. I use a much recommended calculator which takes into account every part of the spec, including overclocking, USB ports, drives, fans, usage levels and so on.

It came out over 110w below even with a major voltage increase to cover overclocking.

You have NO argument unless you can provide a legitimate source to say 700w is not enough.

Your calculator ignored wind resistance and altitude.

I have no reason to think the calculator you link to, is more correct than the article below (where they've explained their testing method.)

    6950 load power use

Your calculator suggests each GPU at 90% load uses less power(137watts iirc) than the single 150watt(8pin or 6pin 75watt+ pcie slot 75watt) PciExpress power plug can supply.

So why do the cards need provision for 300watts worth of connection each if they are fine on just a 6pin + pcie slot power?

The GPU board's features seems far more inline with supporting bit-tech.net's testing. Are bit-tech really known to lack testing credibility?

What about the air movement through the fans being disrupted by you breathing in the same room as the computer?

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

Buztafen: A 700w psu will be fine. At the company i work for we have over 30 pc's running OC i7's and 2 x GTX 690's with 800w-900w psu's. Never had a problem with power. 6950's need much less power.

Just out of interest, were you able to repeat or exceed the synthetic performance results (from 3Dmark's, etc) with those SLI GTX 690 OC systems?

I'm just wondering if the firmware in modern cards will just refuse to make all cuda cores available if the system doesn't provide adequate power, and thereby leaving customer with happy working systems that are being silently throttled. Or in some SLI situations for gaming, causing microstuttering.

    @rodpad

What did you make of the bit-tech articles about GPU/CPU power use?

So 10x more credible than DF then?

But what about the +150watts of GPU connections per card from the mfr?
