Hi! I am looking for a affordable headset for mainly gaming but also for movies and music. Under 100£ would be great but a bit up would not be a problem. The main characteristics are durability and sound quality.

(I have some in mind: steelseries siberia v2, corsair vengeance 1500, rog orion pro, logitech g35, plantronics gamecom 780)

Shameless self-pimpage here, but PC World are offering our F.R.E.Q.5 headset at £30 off for £99.99. It's an absolutely solid piece of kit which will last you a good long time and for sound quality I'll take the Pepsi challenge with this against any of those you mention on that list. Plus it'll work with your phone/MP3 player too thanks to the switchable lead.

I hear Mad Catz suck from the cock of goats. Can you confirm or deny these rumours?

There are still people holding onto a very old image of us based on issues with controllers etc. from the N64 era. However, I'd only need to point to products such as the Street Fighter arcade sticks, the R.A.T.s, the Xbox 360 headsets, the Tritton range as a whole and the aforementioned F.R.E.Q. to indicate that things have changed.

Good idea for a thread - I bust my Corsairs last week by walking too far while wearing them.

Any other recommendations, are the Razer ones any good or are they just shamelessly overpriced? My main need is comfort, the sound needs to be good (don't need to hear footsteps on COD / BF3 as I'm not good enough for it to make a difference!).

I wouldn't buy any Razer stuff. Their quality is decent, but on their mice at least build quality is always terrible. It'll last you maybe 13 months then die just out of warranty.

Edit: I use the Sennheiser PC360 headset but that's probably a bit too far out of your price range.

Fair enough. Shame about the build quality - especially as I know I've got the new Ouroboros for Christmas!

Sennheiser looks fab, might try and limp on with broken ones (one side is now held together with stickytape) till March when it's bonus time, fingers crossed!

If I were you, I wouldn't bother with a gaming headset's dubious sound quality. I'd go with something like this :
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grado-SR60i-Headphones/dp/8814117446/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355924041&sr=8-1
And get a cheap mic to go with it.

I am thinking about the Logitech G35. What do you think of them? I have read many reviews and they sound awesome. Although they are expensive for 2 years old headphones...

Anyone have any recommendations for PC headsets under £40? I'll mainly be using them for gaming but may occasionally listen to music with them.

I did have some turtle beaches that I used on the 360 as well but the wires are far too long to be used on the PC as I keep getting tangled in them. They also need to be fairly well made as I have a tendency to break headsets...

That's what I've got and I think they are incredible. Well worth the money.

Although some older games/applications can struggle by putting sound on the wrong speaker with the surround sound. Irritating when it happens.

Picked up a pair of Creative Aurvana Live cans, holy poop balls, sound quality is impeccable. I'd expect to spend a lot more for this kind of quality.

I had a Razer Kraken Pro which broke on me a few days back. Bit annoyed, decided to get something cheaper as a replacement. Got these and they're great. Sound is surprisingly great, as good as my old Razer ones, and the mic as actually better, crystal clear.
