Valve should just release it with windows. It would make it pointless but then steam is only worth a damn at the moment because of its extensive library. So it's a case of picking the least pointless option.

So what the hell is a Steambox? I always kind of assumed it was OS free, by which I mean it'd have its own proprietary OS (that wasn't Windows or Linux) that simply focuses on running Steam and a few other UI bits and bobs.

Well it increasingly looks like it'll be a PC with Steam's Big Picture and some Valve-designed controllers. If that's all it is, you have to ask yourself why anyone would bother with it, unless it competes with PS4/720 on price in the hope of stealing console gamers.

Having said that, I still find it hard to believe that Valve would be so relatively unambitious, but then the alternatives (described last page) are probably too much to expect.

It does seem like a wasted opportunity if it's essentially just rebranding the PC.

The Piston runs Windows but it's not a true Steambox, have Valve said that they plan to use Windows?

Depends on how they try to sell it, really. If they want to say: here's a PC in a console form factor, it runs all your Steam games, then of course it'll run Windows. If they want to say: here's a new Steam-based console, look at all the new games coming for it, then it can run whatever, as long as it's fast and stable.

Valve said their Steambox would be Linux-based. Whatever people say about them, they are not stupid, so it's rather probable they have a sensible plan. Unless someone in charge lost their mind and are doing this for political, rather than any other, reasons.

They won't release anything for the public for at least a few years, the publisher pick up of linux has been a complete non-starter despite valve's best efforts and without the back catalogue, there's no point whatsoever in getting a linux powered steam box.

Will probably just be a Linux Steam OS for people to install rather than hardware.

    HL3 pre installed with hats.

The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014

We have to do everything for them!

I wonder if they would ever create a standard controller. That must be a important step into the living room before the box.

Source2.0? Hadn't thought of that, could be a contender...
Steam Box, Source 2, a new Launch Title for the Steam box? (not that any specific game comes to mind ;) )

The idea of a steam box is kinda meh to me. It's basically just going to be another console.

It would make more sense to me to create a new steam like software purely for existing or upcoming consoles.

I like the idea of a quiet machine that can play my steam games on the TV. Whatever the PS4/Xbone ends up looking at you can guarantee it'll age just as fast as the 360 did.

That's the thing though. The steam box will age just the same.

That remains to be seen, valve may design it in such a way that it can be upgraded as time goes on with better hardware.

So...a PC? That's basically what it sounds like.

Isn't it meant to be upgradeable? I thought that was kinda the point.

Success or failure, nothing really changes if your happy with how Steam is right now. Just another option in the end, Valve won't shut up shop on Windows.

Can't wait to see what they show.

Source 2.0 feels long overdue. I remember the last one and was blown away at the time. Wasn't there a magazine cover that everyone thought was BS because it looked so good. Crowbar and the prison I think.

A new controller would be great and ideal for the Steam platform to become more user friendly. I wonder what the button icons or letters would be.

Maybe Steam will offer a premium membership, the horror.

If HL3 is an exclusive then I think it'll shift. However, if it's LINUX based, couldn't you just boot up Ubuntu or something and just run it on that?

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Probably. I'd not be surprised if Valve make HL3/Source 2 linux-only in the hope it'll be as much an agent for change as HL2/Steam was, if not more so. They can certainly afford to take the risk.

Could they work with nVidia and AMD and not have driver-related info leak out though?

Oh I'm starting to get stupidly excited for something potentially big. And highly unlikely. Again.

Six hours for the first announcement.

    http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/

No idea what to expect - a basic/better/best series of steambox specs, or steambox/source/something else.

Steambox! Actually powers off steam and makes a whistling noise when it's booting up.

I think it'll be upgradable Linux machine with new Team Fortress, Portal and HL3.

No idea how much it's going to cost though.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.
