Fuck Dark Souls. Imbue yourself in PCness, not shitty console ports.

You're part of the elite now Son, you'd better step up.

    Get bent.

You'll probably want the latest drivers for your graphics card, etc.

    Latest graphics drivers
Virus killer and firewall (surely you know that though)
Steam: then pick as per preference: borderlands 2, skyrim, Nfs most wanted, sonic and sega all stars transformed, hotline miami, etc
Chrome and Firefox browsers. I'd say chrome is better.
If you don't want or aren't going to buy ms office, then get OpenOffice.

Ive got a 7850 2gb gpu , it easy to get the drivers? Also, have got steam and bought skyrim, new vegas, torchlight 2 and the last humble bundle.

Will no doubt get sucked into the steam sales!

Don't buy much for now, just get everything up to date and install Steam. Try to remove as much of the mostly useless fluff that manufacturers install on a new build. Things like trial software are a waste of space at best and can run in the background, slowing your system down or interfering with the things you actually want to run.

Peripherals (Xbox pad etc) are your priority because in a little while the Steam Xmas sale will start and your library will fill up very quickly. Get a few demos in the meantime to tide you over and give you something to test out graphics options on.

Virus/firewall duties are handled well enough by Microsoft Security Essentials. No need to install a load of other crap and it's free if you have a "genuine" copy of windows.

Got a chea official OEM of win 7, reckon its not worth getting AVG or a 3rd party anti virus then?

@kadooosh yeah the drivers should ask you about updating. Mine does at least. If not the Graphucs card manufacturer or amd site will have them.

Oh and definitely get a windows Xbox pad. Great for games on steam and also for emulators.

Surely having a list of games to play would have been the reason to buy a gaming PC?

@kadooosh you have to buy an adaptor which I think costs about the same as the pad itself!

@kadooosh I use Avast and Zone alarm on my much slower setup and they don't interfere at all really. I'd add them to be safe, nothing worse than fucking up a good pc.

@Steve_Perry I'm not sure if the standard 360 wired pad works on the pc, the pc specific one should only be about 25 quid max

The standard 360 wired pad has worked fine plug and play for about 7 years.
