Could this be how we as a species die out?

Long term exposure to certain enviromental changes, lifestyle etc will eventually decrease our sperm count to point where we can't procreate - think Children of Men but with infertile guys.

Or could it be Nature's answer to overpopulation? My dad always told me, "Life........urr...finds a way..."

Well I've often wondered whether the increase in people born gay and the increase in cancer rates is partly a method of self-preservation of the species by preventing us over populating.

Please note that is not something I believe as such, just something I've wondered about.

Anything that happens slowly will in likelihood be counteracted by science imo. Historically whenever anything looks like it might genuinely wipte out humanity, we've been pretty quick to find a solution.

So my bet would be whatever kills us will be pretty sudden - meteor, tidal wave, giant octo-monster etc.

Yeah, these are not permanent changes and will, in part, be reversed anyway if the population falls.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Well that pretty much sums me up.

But you can get around that by (in my case) having a knife shoved into your balls and samples cut out, sperm taken from those samples and then individually injected into eggs and those are then implanted into the woman. (ICSI IVF.)

Sure, it bloody painful and expensive, but as long as it is low count, rather than no sperm then you can go ahead with it. And I am sure if it was a global issue prices would be dropping hugely and the procedure would become comonplace.

By time it could be an issue, based solely on the numbers in the article, genetic research will have made it a non issue.

Giant gorilla attack. Either that, or as BobTheBuilder said, everyone is going to turn gay and stop making the babies. I read a study a few weeks back and its said you can stand anywhere on earth now and you will never be more than 3 metres away from a homosexual. 3 metres. That means there's one in your bedroom somewhere. Just lurking in the corner. Trying shoes on and stuff. Getting a spray tan.

When will niteninja be along to explain that it's all down to government sound waves lowering virility so that The Man can decide who from the illuminati can procreate?

"We" will die out eventually, regardless of what happens. In the sense that what we are now will not be forever. If you traveled through time by a few million years, chances are you won't be able to reproduce with what has descended from us. Assuming we're not an evolutionary dead end.

If technology regressed enough so that global/intercontinental travel became impossible, you'd find that humans on different continents will eventually drift away from each other genetically, and become separate species. That could still happen. Our population density is dependent on specific technologies and a level of energy consumption that may not be sustainable in the long run regardless of how environmentally friendly we are.
