I'll opt for Journey as my game of the year.
Overall a very disappointing year, I barely bought anything. -

I'm surprised to see that mentioned, fair enough you obviously liked it. personally I found it infuriating and in general to be a confused experience, it was trying to be two different games and failing in both regards. It had a lot of potential and if the whole game had been a lot more like the deceptively good demo level then it'd probably have been a pretty decent game.
Deep breath, as it's been a great year. I wouldn't say all of these deserve GOTY, but they're all pretty bloody good:

Registered 2 years agoSleeping dogs and the walking dead are the two games that surprised me the most. I hadn't even heard of the comics or tv series before the game can't out so just assumed it would be another telltale disappointment. I normally don't like zombie themes but was really impressed by it -

Just had my first couple of hours on Far Cry 3.
Not impressed at all.
Worst first few hours in ANY game that i can think of tbh.
I'll give it the weekend, could be traded monday.

Compared to SSX 3 it was a souless mess, one of my most dissapointing games of this gen, and that Autolog stuff can piss right off. -

Registered 5 years agoWell I've only bought a lot of old games this year, with the exception being ME3 which I really enjoyed. Seeing the love Borderlands 2 and Farcry 3 have got has tempted me into getting them however so we'll see! -

It was a valiant attempt I thought, but carried a bit too much of the baggage of a mid-development change in focus brought about by fan backlash and some horrendous design in the deadly descents.MrTomFTW wrote:

Registered 3 years agoVirtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, hands down. Probably the greatest and most well balanced fighter ever conceived.
Wipeout 2048. Still the best game I've played on Vita, and one of the best ever versions of Wipeout. In an alternate universe somewhere, the Wipeout games are one of the top franchises out there and Sony Liverpool are a household name.
Ratchet and Clank Trilogy. Three of the best PS2 games sexied up and on one disc? Yes please!
Far Cry 3. Stunning sense of location, some totally bonkers emergent gameplay, and diving into water has never been so satisfying!
Twisted Metal. This was easily the most chaotic online game i've ever played. People complained that it was a game from the mid to late 90s wrapped in a modern skin. That's exactly what i wanted from it.
Can i throw in Rayman Origins too because of the Vita version? I've mostly plaed it on the PS3!
Honourable mentions: Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Borderlands 2, King of Fighters XIII and Binary Domain.Girl, you thought he was a man, but he was a muffin.

I need to add DayZ to the my list, sure it counts.
Very surprised how few mentions FEZ has received - a masterpiece imo.Girl, you thought he was a man, but he was a muffin.

Registered 5 years agoI'm surprised it's taken 6 pages for someone to single out Halo 4. I've not played it of course., but it seemed to please the fans of the previous ones. -

Registered 7 years agoHalo 4 is a great Halo game but that's also its problem, the Halo design is starting to show its age. I think the consensus is that 4 is proving that 343 can make a proper Halo game and update it a bit, they didn't go far enough really but probably didn't want to alienate 'teh hardcorz' so the next one will be where they start doing something a bit different. Please don't use the delete button, think of the children.

Registered 6 years agoThis has been a very good year for games. Mostly sequels however, but what sequels they are!
It's extremely close between Borderlands 2 and The Walking Dead for me.
Borderlands 2 is bonkers, laugh out loud, over the top shooting with a lot of reply value for the loot hungry.
Walking Dead was a well thought out, story driven masterclass. Didn't quite get "the choices affect story" premise completely right (once again it's more an illusion of choice in the final parts), but it didn't matter by the end. I was completely and utterly emotionally involved.
I'm going to say GOTY:
The Walking Dead.
NB: Biggest let-down was Halo 4. Dated game model, lazy story with even lazier plot devices. Looked fantastic however, but as my old man used to say "You can't polish a turd!". -
Journey.

Registered 11 years agoThe game I've played most this year is Battlefield 3 by a country mile.
Oh, it's from last year.
In that case Borderlands 2, even though I got incredibly bored with it.

Registered 6 years agoHalo 4 is indeed pushing the normal Halo gameplay perhaps that little bit too far, but it's understandable why.
The real sadness about that is that I still think the gameplay is far better than almost all other FPS. -

Registered 7 years ago@RedSparrows I more or less agree, I think it says a lot about the genre. It really needs a Half Life 3 shaped kick in the ass. Please don't use the delete button, think of the children.

Registered 8 years agoI can't really think of any really. I've played some good games but haven't played a game that's given me that must play this every night feeling since asscreed 2 or la noire really. The better ones would be dishonoured (which I got bored of after 5 hours), sleeping dogs, asscreed 3 (lovely graphics too) and some of the weird little steam games whose names I always forget. I liked the testament of Sherlock Holmes a lot. Too -
Journey for me, absolutely beautiful game.
