Yeah, the inventory needed addressing, but it got OVER addressed in ME2... to the point where I just picked a favoured setup and ran with that for the entire game. ME3 made things a bit better in that respect with the branching powers.

Once I started to think of the game as more of an Uncharted type experience, with a bit more scope for free roaming and player driven interaction, I was fine with it.
I agree that once you stop struggling for air, it's a much more pleasant experience ;)

@darkmorgado Indeed. Feels a bit like the Ford approach to choice. No matter what you do, we'll haul you back onto the straight and narrow...

Sorry a bit lacklustre for me this year, with XCOM being such a let down. My vote goes for Dungeons of Dredmor (only got it this year) with brilliant music and addictive gameplay and a myriad of skills to choose, its been non-stop gaming nirvana.

    XCOM a let down?

Fair enough - having just criticised Diablo 3 and ME3, I can't really argue! Out of interest, is it "bugs" or (lack of) "features" which disappointed you with XCOM?

He's looking for a rise. Check the XCOM thread, he thinks the upcoming DLC was stripped out from the original game. Which given the massive difference between the DLC and the main game (a series of side missions vs the freeform main game) is a bit like criticising a chess set for releasing checkers as DLC.

I'd be surprised if he's even played it.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Both. The bugs were niggly problems I had with it, but it never felt the same as the original with the technicality removed, especially the removal of multiple bases (and homebase invasions). Music score was especially woeful, no suspense whatsoever.

@King_Edward I would wait for GotY edition if I were in your position, to be fair.

I'll let you know when 2012 is finished and I've played all of the games. As a placeholder until then I'll chose Tetris since it's the best game ever made and EA have been chucking out a version of it at least once a year for the past decade so it counts.

Journey for me. Runners up include The Unfinished Swan and The Walking Dead. I haven't really been bowled over by any retail releases this year, although I am yet to play Dragon's Dogma, Far Cry 3 and Dishonoured; all three I think I'll enjoy.

I need to add DayZ to the my list, sure it counts.

Very surprised how few mentions FEZ has received - a masterpiece imo.

Phil Fish being a massive cunt costs it some points.

I never got round to purchasing FEZ, but the soundtrack was utterly sublime, some of the best game music I've heard in recent times.

Ah, forgot about The Walking Dead. Not a bad game. To be honest though, it's been quite an underwhelming year in terms of the number of great games being released. Plenty of good games, but nothing that will be remembered a few years down the line.
    How do you know?
Because everyone knows the world ends in 2012 ;)

I think I've only finished a handful of games this year, at best. Out of those I can only think of The Walking Dead, Sleeping Dogs, ME3 and Binary Domain.

Aside from ME3 I'd happily vote for all of them as GOTY.

    and @darkymoragoadodo

I didn't have a problem with the story converging on a single point to finish as the paths taken to get there were so unique. I did feel that the ending was a bit rush-o-finish but I'll happily run with that.

I *think* I may have felt better about the ending if I hadn't seen SO many articles and discussions going on about it. Much like the furore over MGS4's cutscene length constantly made me question them (whereas I happily sat through MGS2's length exposition).

Just realised that I've not bought or played a retail game at all this from this year, which leaves XBLIG Little Racers: Street as my fave (and only game) of the year. A great little purchase. It even made me get a couple months of Gold.

Deep breath, as it's been a great year. I wouldn't say all of these deserve GOTY, but they're all pretty bloody good:

    Mass Effect 3
    Halo 4
    Forza Horizon
    FTL
    Hotline Miami
    Borderlands 2
Darkness II (which I really enjoyed)
    Asura's Wrath
    Super Stardust Delta
    Binary Domain
    SSX
    Street Fighter X Tekken
    Fez
    The Witcher 2
    Trials Evo
    Max Payne 3
Spec Ops: The Line (The only game to upset me so much I had to stop playing for a while)
    Spelunky
    Iron Brigade
    Guild Wars 2
    Rock Band Blitz
    Tekken Tag 2
    Joe Danger 2
    XCOM
    Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

I preferred the Daily Mail expansion where you could demonise minorities and sims without a job.
