Indian Woman Dies in Irish Hospital Ater Being Denied Termination of Pregnancy

    I'm sure quite a number of people on this board will of heard of this case with the wide coverage it's received but I don't recall any discussion about it on here.

    For those who don't know the story Savita Halappanavar was admitted to University Hospital Galway with back pain. She then suffered a miscarriage a couple of days later. The fetus still had a heartbeat however and despite Savita's numerous requests the hospital refused to perform a medical abortion.

    The fetus survived for 3 days during which time Savita picked up an infection due to the state she was left in. This then lead to her death.

    There's been uproar here in Ireland about it since and a lot of people are looking for laws to be changed. Seems absolutely ridiculous that a woman can die because of backwards laws in a country shes not even native to.

    What's backwards about protecting life? Personally I find the infanticide practiced in the UK barbaric and plenty of women have suffered and died due to abortions too.

    She had already suffered a miscarriage so the baby had no chance of surviving anyway..

    Depends, it's a choice of losing one or both because I can guarantee that if the mother dies in the case of a 17 week old foetus then the foetus is going to die too. Oh, aside from the fact that they already knew the foetus wasn't viable so they put the woman at risk unnecessarily because of a law based on religious beliefs more than medical knowledge.

    The incident with Savita was a very unfortunate one that unfolded messily but more lives would be lost if abortion became as convenient as it is in the UK.

    The difference is we try to respect human life at the beginning, in the middle, and in the end which is why we don't allow euthanasia either. It's not always pretty but the alternative is worse.

    You do realise that most women in Ireland just hop on a ferry to Holyhead when they want an abortion right? The laws over there just harm in the case of emergencies like this.

    As for euthanasia, yeah, there's nothing more horrific than someone being able to leave life on their own terms. I prefer the idea of people suffering for as long as possible when there's nothing we can do for them.

    Anyone who tried to defend what was done here is an utter cunt.

    Everyone agrees that there was no way to save the baby, and the current law would permit abortion in such a case. I hope the doctors involved are prosecuted for negligent homicide or something similar, because as far as I can see from what has been reported, they sacrificed a woman's life for religious reasons.

    And BTW there's a parliamentary report explaining the current medical evidence regarding abortion, which is very readable:

    (I especially recommend the bit about "foetal pain" because it explains quite well why 24 weeks is a sensible, humane cut off).

    To me allowing children to be born when they are unwanted or parents are not ready to deal with them properly is just as cruel as abortion.

    Also, abortion lowers crime rates.
