So I'm hoping for a 3DS for Christmas. I've never had an original DS before so that whole library is a new place to me, any stone cold classics people would say are needed? Any genres really if they're good games.

The first one is, although it's not the strongest in the series. There's a dungeon you have to play through over and over again, between visits to further dungeons. That and it's a little on the easy side. I quite enjoyed it though.

Games I can personally recommend include Final Fantasy III and IV, Dragon Quest IX, GTA Chinatown Wars, any of the Professor Layton games, Yoshi's Island DS, Super Maro 64 DS and either of the Castlevania games. Your best bet is to check out a few videos and see if they're what you're interested in. I could also recommend Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing: Wild World, but I think 7 is the stronger Mario Kart game and I feel weird recommending an Animal Crossing game.

    3DS: 4210 4002 8289 (Dave)
    Wii U: Raiko87
    Xbox Live: Raiko87

Animal Crossing is ace. It's the perfect thing to play when you need to relax.

As for The World Ends With You, it's an RPG set in something like an alternate-reality version of the Shibuya district in Tokyo. It's probably one of the most original RPGs to come out in years, and makes full use of DS features. The game looks stunning, and has a killer soundtrack.

Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
A cross between a turn-based strategy game and tetris, quite hard to describe but very good, the main campaign is a good 20 hours of play.

    Etrian Odessey series
Dungeon Crawlers with a modern JRPG presentation, where you pen the map yourself on the touchscreen.

    Professor Layton series
Puzzle games. Lots and lots of puzzles. It's worth playing Last Spectre before the 3DS one as they are the first two parts of a trilogy.

    Castlevania games
All Metroidvania style, a mix of exploration, platforming and RPG mechanics.

Contra IV. You'll have import it but it's the spiritual sequel to contra III on the SNES. Loads of unlockables including the NES game as it's the anniversary edition.

    Metal Slug 7.
As above, import only (although US DS games work fine on an EU 3DS) but a fantastic run-and-gun with lots of different modes etc.

Dragon Quest IV, V and VI
    Fantastic JRPGs.

    Aliens: Infestation
Like a cross between contra and metroidvania. Great little blaster.

    Nanostray/nanostray 2
    Shmups.

    Bangai-o-spirits
Erm, a shooter with added puzzle elements. Strange but highly addictive.

    Phoenix Wright series
Adventure games based around a courtroom dynamic of examining evidence and pointing holes in testimony and logic. Very silly but great fun.

That should be enough to get you started! :-)

Meteos and Zookeeper are cracking puzzlers. Animal Crossing: Wild World is another essential, just a lovely game to play at the end of a long day. Solatorobo is another RPG to add to those already mentioned e.g the Dragon Quest games and The World Ends With You.

    3DS: Mooky - 2019-9643-8311
    NNid: Agent_Llama
    Vita/PS3/360: Faloola
    FFXIV ARR: Alekzander Lockhart, Odin

Thanks peeps! I had forgotten about that aliens infestation, metroid combined with aliens can only be a good thing. Did a 2D metroid ever get released on DS? Seems like such an obvious pairing.

    @Raiko101

Indeed; that's an even more obvious pairing! Getting retro to do that would be so amazing, but I guess they'll be doing something wii U related. Saying that a new DK country would be rather lovely in 3D aswell I imagine.

@jack24 Donkey Kong Country Returns would look amazing in 3D. Hopefully we'll see something like that on the 3DS one day.

    Crono Trigger
    Final Fantasy IV
Golden Sun Dark Dawn (although it's not as good as the two GBA games)
    New Super Mario Bros

Zelda Phantom Hourglass is great, but Spirit Tracks was horrible (IMO).

Reminds me, the DS had quite a few good rhythm action games; Jam With The Band was the sequel to Daigasso Band Brothers which got released in Europe too, then there's Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents and Rhythm Tengoku Gold/Rhythm Heaven, which I remember picking up for peanuts after the 3DS launch.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

    @angeltreats

I've never really got into the whole JRPG thing. Is Chrono trigger a good place to begin?

All the games mentioned are great, especially The World Ends With You, but I have spent a stupid amount of time playing '42 All Time Classics' on my DS.

    Certainly worth a look.
