Well, it has finally happened ... albeit six years later!

Thanks to the storming success of Kinect two Christmases ago, Sony had a bit of a hard time catching up, but here we are, neck-and-neck at long last.

Good news for everyone I guess ... and no more childish 'my console is selling better than yours' playground arguments too!

...err, but surely they're not going to stay neck-and-neck.

I wonder how many unique users actually have the consoles - that would be an interesting stat. I just think so many 360s were faulty that the average user has gone through 2, maybe 3 (or more) in this gens time horizon.

I think I must be the only person in the world who's had the same 360 since the beginning.

    @Benno

Possibly, but then there are so many variables otherwise, like the number of unused consoles, number of PS3s which are only used as Blu-ray players, etc.

I'm not sure the number of consoles sold can even be used as a reliable fanboy baiting tool at all. :-)

I'm pretty sure you aren't. Even if the original 360 was notoriously prone to breaking, there must be consoles which still work out there, probably in the millions.

And here we have the utterly bizarre phenomenon of people actually caring if the console they have bought has been bought by more people than the other one.

The argument continues for years as Sony and Microsoft sit back and think of the idiots who are 'fans' of their corporate money making structure and think of new ways to rinse them.
The only thing that is utterly bizarre is you. Someone just posted an objective stat about console sales, I don't know why you're so upset.

If you'd said to me back in the days just before the PS3 launch that it would take this long for Sony to catch up I would have laughed in your face.

    Good job, Sony!

So that means 235 Million Consoles have been sold so far this gen compared to 199 Million by the end of this gen. WIth at least a year to go that's quite a decent increase.

Whereas a year after launch of the PS3 the laughter would sound if someone said the PS3 would catch up to the 360 ever. :-)

Sony did two good jobs this gen. The first good job was botching the launch, the second was converting the console to a product actually able to stand and compete on its own merits.

    "Last gen", surely?

But yes, the market has grown considerably, and so have grown the sales.

Wonder how many people bought a PS3 as a route to a cheap Blu-Ray player?

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Considering it is quite an expensive BR player probably not many.

I'd say not very few in perhaps a year to two years after launch. After that, yeah, probably almost nobody.

And I'd say lots of people have bought every model of 360.

In the grand scheme, it means nowt. A sale is a sale.

Console sales figures don't matter, either as an objective indicator of a console's worth (so the Wii is the best this gen?), to the user (unless they are truly childish, or it is very early in the cycle and they're worried they've bought something stillborn) or even to the manufacturer (they care about attached sales and profits).

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Not worth, but its very strong indicator of popularity, which is an interesting stat in itself.

    YES! GET IN SONY!

    Giveafuck.

My PS3 was used more than my xbox before Halo 4 and Forza Horizon....as a DVD and blu ray player.

For me, all the consoles have frequently impressed and frustrated this gen. The good thing, as far as I'm concerned, is they've all sold well. No more hardware casualties.

Credit to Sony, they really turned around a botched launch and some terrible PR decisions. Hopefully, this gen, they've learnt some humility. Their attitude and direction around 2005 was horrendous - Lik Sang for instance :(.
