Some of the facts presented in this thread aren't facts at all. They are inventions and fabrications by the respective forumites.

For a thread which advertises itself as being full of fact in its title, this one has surprisingly few.

Nice. Also there hasn't been a single human past low-earth orbit (600 km) since the early 80s (Moon orbit is about 385,000 km).

The sun is really big. Much bigger than it looks in the sky. The reason it looks small in the sky is because it is far away. And the further you are away from something the smaller it looks.

    Spain's first astronaut

This honorary title was given by the Spanish people to Admiral Blanco, then prime minister of Spain and designated successor to General Franco, after the ETA in 1973 bombed the street underneath his car on his way home from church, catapulting it over a 5-story building.

Unfortunately, the space mission ended in tragedy, as he didn't survive.

Top film director Martin Scorsese has a fear of cupboards after a rat jumped out of one and bit him when he was a child. This is why none of the characters in his films ever look in cupboards*.

*Contrary to popular belief, Ray Liotta did not, in fact, open a cupboard at the end of Goodfellas. The scene was shot against a green screen and a CGI cupboard added later after Mr Scorsese had gone home.

To this day, top film director Martin Scorsese still hasn't seen the whole of goodfellas. He insists on stopping it just before the bit where ray lotta opens a (fake) cupboard.

Ostriches are often not taken seriously. They can run faster than horses, and the males can roar like lions. Cupboards hold no fear for them.

Think I'll just switch everything off.

The common four stroke internal combustion engine actually has five strokes per cycle, but the middle one is never mentioned. This is because of an old superstition that is long forgoton but is reputed to involve seagulls.
Intake stroke, compression stroke, 'seagull stroke', combustion stroke and exhaust stroke.
