Both Sony and Microsoft are pushing for 10 year hardware cycles, with a couple of iterations during it's life.

I remember Sony saying this at least.

COD2 seems like a completely different animal to the game being released tomorrow. It's hard to even see the connection. This generation has changed from a gaming perspective, quite a lot.
I think the difference between those two games is greater than the difference between Halo 2 on the xbox, and Halo 3 on the 360.
Halo 2 was an insane achievement though. Even by the standards of top-end Xbox games it was nigh on untouchable. Same with PGR2 and 3.

I think it's a good thing. I like the idea of investing in a piece of technology that isn't surpassed by a newer version in 6 months time. *ahem!!* Apple.

Apple do it less frequently than other hardware manufacturers in the same market.

And Halo 3 was underwhelming when it came out, looking like a slightly higher res version of Halo 2. There where already far better looking games out on the PC at the same time.

Yup, bloody bored of the 360 now and not desperate enough to go PC only so want a new console.

WiiU doesn't count because it is basically just a gimped 360.
I love Mowgli when he spouts his completely OTT bollocks.

I like it, it saves me money and allows developers concentrate on making good games on tech they understand.
Playing dishonored and halo 4 at no point did I stop I think I wanted a more powerful machine.
There are only two reasons I can think of to make me want a new console. Bf3 64 player and the total war series.

Having just put the EU/Pal release dates together, I can say that the gap between PS3 (last Pal console released) and WiiU is the biggest gap for a new console launch since the videogame crash of 1983 caused a 5 year gap between the Intellivision/Colecovision and the NES/Master System/Atari 7800.

I just started high school when the 360 came out, spent hours and hours playing Halo 3 with friends at their place on the weekends, 4-6 consoles usually, one night we had a a bunch of 360s and we tripped the power breaker in the house, everyones except for 2 of the 360s and TVs power went off. I would also spend hours at home making a custom map and game for us to play. Good fun.
Graduated now and have gone through 4 Xboxs? Could say 5 when this one goes out, I have the MW3 Xbox as a back-up right now. I resurrected my first Xbox 360 as it died on a Christmas morning, did the towel trick, the colour was screwed up but it lasted long enough. Funnily enough my 360 Elite had the shortest life.
Probably going to wait awhile before I get a Wii-U, if at all. Most likely will though.

Just think - we may have a moonbase before we see the next console after the PS4/720.

I've started and finished my degree, post grad, got married and moved city since the 360 came out. And I was very late to buying one as I didn't game much at the time. Feels like forever since Halo 3.

I only joined this generation when I bought a PS3 in January this year. I still haven't found many good games for it.

Freaks me out a bit. Someone could have got their 360 in high school, gone to college, finished their A Levels and then obtained a degree.... all without a successor being released.

I don't even remember when I got my 360, but suddenly it feels like a whole world away.

I'm specifically thinking about the 360 really. I was thinking back to when I got it - I was just a kid. I've had two different jobs since then. I've got married. I've bought a house. I've had a child. I'm a different person.
Wow, you have been busy! I imagine you must feel proud when you look back at your life like that in the last six or seven years, hey...?

I remember buying a Xbox 360 at launch along with Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing 3 ... it certainly wasn't cheap, especially with the Panasonic HDTV I purchased a month prior to then.

I quite like the fact that this generation has been going on FOREVER, mainly because it's really nice to know you have got the most out of these little machines. The Wii U just totally doesn't interest me at this moment in time because both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are still going strong ... which is great!

The one that gets me is playing Xbox for 10 years and only last year, Halo Anniversary. More than a decade.

This generation seems to die then comes back to life with a great game or two but I think this year has shown they can do better but for a bigger price that isn't worth pursuing. All a bit boring now as well because of it. Feel like we are going back in time with gloss rather than forward so excited to see tech advancements that will hopefully bring new ideas along with them.

Another thought, smartphones weren't all that when next gen consoles released. iPhone launched 2 years after Xbox 360.

    ...gloss over expanse...
Sums it up for me. Franchises ruined, wishes dashed, features scaled back, day-one-patch necessities, high hopes now laying in tatters amid bug-ridden, social-media, micro-transaction and DLC required facades.

From Morrowind to Oblivion to Skyrim.

Burnout 2 to Paradise to NFS:MW

    CoD/MoH to MW1 to BLOPS2

Seemed for a while we were on the right path, but who knew ?
The Valkyria Chronicles, Souls, Sturmovik and Yakuza games, possibly GTA IV/RDR. That's all that really shone for me if I'm honest.

The fact this generation is still going, yet gfx haven't really moved on that much, in terms of on high end tech, makes me wonder if the next gen will just plateau.

Mmm... yes, there's literally no way graphics can get any better.

I'm not lamenting how long the 360 had been going btw. I love it. Great console. Long may she continue.

I guess it's just I went from ps1 to dreamcast to ps2 in about the same timeframe, do this really feels epic.

And yeah, I've had a big few years. Late 20s and early 30s tend to be packed with growing up.

Compare it to GPU generations and you see just how lucky you are.

7 years ago (okay... 2004) SLI was just launched. Okay that's still a year before XBox 2 and PS3 but it's quite telling! WoW also came out! Yeah, that old Dinosaur.

    2005 was the Gen 7 GPU year. Since then we're had Gen 8 & 9 (the 100)...
    The 200 and 300 in Mid 2008
The 400 and 500 in 2010 and now the 600 series in 2012.

In the space of one console, us PC gamers could have (potentially) recycled GPUs 5 times although we tend to skip a generation or two.

We've also had Win XP as the current OS (Vista wasn't out until 2007), then Vista, 7, and now 8. 4 operating systems in the lifetime of this generation's consoles. Even if you regarded the WiiU as 'next gen' (and have every right to) Windows 8 still beat it by a month or two!

Intel chips have also had several significant updates in this time, at least 4 socket changes although I've probably missed some (lots!).

Although saying that, we do have the pleasure of upgrading hardware whenever we want to... The advantage of consoles is also their main problem.

To be fair I've had the same PC for most of that time and it can still run most things very well. Five years as opposed to seven, but still, you don't have to constantly upgrade.
  • Deleted user 12 November 2012 20:44:15
Unfortunately for the PC it gets console ports so most of that oomph is utterly wasted.
