Is it just me, or has this generation been going on FOREVER?

I'm specifically thinking about the 360 really. I was thinking back to when I got it - I was just a kid. I've had two different jobs since then. I've got married. I've bought a house. I've had a child. I'm a different person.

Games like CoD2, King Kong and PGR3 seem like games from another era. Remember Perfect Dark zero? Remember Kameo? No. Neither do I...

And it's still got at least another year or so in it realistically. and that's just until the 720 gets released. The 360 could still have years left running parallel with it.

    It never ends.

I think its the first generation where you have actually been able to eek out performance for so long.

COD2 seems like a completely different animal to the game being released tomorrow. It's hard to even see the connection. This generation has changed from a gaming perspective, quite a lot.

I think Halo 4 has just shown that there's still life left in the 360.

I think the difference between those two games is greater than the difference between Halo 2 on the xbox, and Halo 3 on the 360.

Heh. If you go to Romania the main console is STILL the Playstation 2. And when I was in SA last week I'd say PS2 was still 1/3 of most game stores I went into.

Now that is impressive staying power.

Yeah I've upgraded telly three times since I got my 360. First thing I had it in was a 4:3 CRT.

See. That could mean that either Halo was ahead of its time, or just didn't move.
COD, as with most popular games outside dancing wavey hands shit, just got more grimy and violent.
"how do we improve on the last one?"
    "I know, shoot some civilians"

I sometimes wonder WHO the fuck games are for nowadays...certainly not me anymore.

It only feels so long because we're still waiting for the next lot of consoles. When I think about it, the two previous generations felt just as long. Especially the PS1 era. 3D gaming changed so much from the start of that consoles life to the end. It almost feels like two eras in itself.

I meant more in terms of graphics than content.

The fact there's been four full Halo games on the 360 also says a lot.

Ha, same. I had a 4:3 sony for a few months, then got a 28 Panasonic Widscreen monster, then a 32 Samsung LCD and finally a 42 Samsung LED.

Looking at that list, im exactly as much of a wastful cunt as my mrs says I am.

Since I've had mine, I've got married, moved three times, changed jobs, been made redundant twice and separated from my wife.

This generation probably isn't actually that much longer than in the past, but it sure feels like it.

But that's just it, to me...I honestly don't see that much difference with high end PCs, look wise. Graphics should be more about style, and character, but they all look the bloody same. Miserable and with boom headshots!

I got into gaming around the time the Mega Drive came out, but I was too young to care about the differences between that, the NES and the commadore we had in the house, so that all felt like one generation of consoles to me.

I dont think its actually felt like that since games havent really tailed off and it doesnt really feel like a seven year old console.

Certainly its going to seem weird and expensive if it ever went back to ever three years (which it wont as this is probably the penultimate generation).

Yeah, this feels different. It still doesn't feel like it's near the end. It didn't even really get going until about two years in or so.

I do think the 360 has been a bit different to any other console. It's epic. People are still buying them new and not in a "cheap at the end of its lifespan" kind of way. It's been seven years!

I think the fact that the last gen was so ridiculously short doesn't help matters.

It is incredible though, when you consider how much other technology has changed in the last 6/7 years, and everyone is still playing on a console from 2005.

Halo 4 is a pretty game but it comes at a price. Boxy, linear levels and no theatre mode for the campaign tells its own story. I don't think 343 are getting anything more out of the hardware, they're just prioritising gloss over expanse.

@kalel I think that's largely due to lack of other available options!
If Nintendo had launched a better powered (than WiiU) console 18 months ago I think they would have sold a shitload.

Both Sony and Microsoft are desperate to eke out this generation as long as possible. Without WiiU launching I think they would have waited at least another year before announcing anything.

I think the 360 is coming up towards the end of it's lifecycle as most gaming today seem to be driven by technology. MS want to move forward. As with any console that is reaching this part of it's life, it's been around long enough now for developers to have really got a handle of it.

Just Cause 2 still stuns. Forza Horizon is amazing looking and although I have it, I've not played Halo 4 yet.

However, looking to next year, the release schedule for the 360 looks plentiful. When the new MS shiny-shiny comes out all attention will shift to it. With the installed userbase and the cost of moving to the next-gen (probably) will keep the 360 healthy for a long time to come.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Its weird, its probably due to the youth time dialation effect, but I thought I had my amiga forever, but I actually 'only' had it as long as the xbox. Got it in 89 and it finally curled up its toes in 96.

When the new consoles launch, Sony and Microsoft will cut the prices of the old machines dramatically to keep them relevant.

I feel the age of the machine though. I would never buy a game on 360 that I can get on PC anymore, simply because of the 30 or lower fps.

me neither. I like the fact that we now have a baseline on the PC thanks to XBOX 360 lead platform.
  • Deleted user 12 November 2012 17:17:31
Yup, bloody bored of the 360 now and not desperate enough to go PC only so want a new console.

WiiU doesn't count because it is basically just a gimped 360.
