Yeah, definitely prefer the Google store (although you can get it on the Fire with some technical effort). It all comes down to price for me - if it's massively discounted and under 100, I think I'll go for it.

You can install whatever app you want on a Fire - it doesn't have to be downloaded from Amazon. You can even install the google play store if you like, and gets apps from there. Having an android phone helps hugely . . . but I don't think it's necessary. Download apps to your phone, use a file manager app to make a backup of them, and then side load them onto the fire. It's easier enough, I managed it!

Edit - you don't have to root to install apps - apart from the play store it seems (after a quick google).

Is 7'' better for commuting than 10''?

I'm starting to think so as holding the galaxy tab 10.1 might destroy my poor wrists?

Either that or I just want a new toy.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

    I'd say so, yes.

Having said that, I recently got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G for 178 \o/

Careful though mate, I was kinda lucky with Amazon, coz they dropped the price of the 3G last Wednesday only briefly - snapped it up then - they're back up to about 300 (after cashback) now. The Wifi-only is 178 atm.

    I'll sell it for 190 + Case. P&P for 5 I think.

Picked up a Note 10.1 about a month ago, buyer's remorse kicked in after reading about the Nexus 10 a few days later.

After living with it it turns out that the pen isn't a gimmick if you work with a lot of pdfs. So my initial justification for buying it has turned out to be the most valuable feature.

I'd also be interested in how balanced the Nexus 10's spec is, doesn't seem to quite have enough graphical grunt to drive the screen.

Any thoughts on the Asus Transformer Infinity? Looks quite nippy, and the keyboard dock/bonus battery seems quite nifty. Heading to the US soon so I should be able to pick it up a little cheaper.

It isn't bad i would think. However, ASUS have some terrible quality control issues (or had) and the infinity suffers from slow I/O issues. This causes lag and other things which could potentially get annoying and also random hangs, The stock browser might also be dire in performance. I own the transformer TF300 which has some of these issues. Regardless, i've grown to love the form factor of the keyboard and tablet and it works well. You could head over to XDA and see opinions there. I haven't used an infinity but i know that it does suffer I/O issues

I'm on the verge of ordering either an ASUS Transformer Infinity TF700 64 GB or an iPad 4 64 GB. The Nexus 10 looks awesome too but the 32 GB max storage plus lack of microSD expansion puts me off it. The ASUS tablet at least has microSD plus 64 GB of internal storage (and the option to add SD storage via the keyboard dock) and the display sounds impressive at 1920x1200 on a 10" screen. Also with my Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android, it would mean I could share paid for apps. The only thing stopping me ordering one right now is that the sound is supposed to be very average. I know you can use earphones but it would have been nice to have had a tablet with good sound quality. The iPad 4 is supposedly better in that respect and the tablet itself (the white one) looks gorgeous but it doesn't have Android and the lack of expansion is a little off-putting.

Got a Samsung galaxy tab 2 - I think it's rather good. The 10 inch size is just perfect. (MATRON!!!)

Best 10 inch I've used is the iPad 4 and I say that as an Android fan. Though I'm yet to get my hands on a transformer.

I have a transformer prime. Can't really fault it, excellent performance (4.1) and build quality however you are in part paying for the keyboard.

The keyboard has a full size usb port, SD slot and in built battery so while very useful it does push the price up. As a result it is ipad money so the normal positive of 'cheaper' doesn't work.

Known as 'Sharzam' in 98.5% of games

What is the best cheapy one at the moment. I am looking for something to write wordpress on, basic apps and netbrowse. Not too fussed about an app store or gaming.

    My tuppence.

If you want apps & games - and lots of them - get an iPad. If you want to be able to do things such as play emulators and flash games etc - get an Android.

    :)

    Wow ... just wow!

Sony's 10.1-inch Xperia Tablet Z is thinner than the iPad mini

... amazingly, this is all packed tightly into a 6.9mm-thick, 495g-heavy body, which is a shy over one pound (in weight).

It makes me wish Google would happily let Sony design their future Nexus models.

Just came in here to post that. Their Xperia Z phone looks amazing as well.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Google Play is now available on the Nook HD+ (and Nook HD), which to my mind makes it possibly the best value 'big' tablet money can buy. Sure you could root it before, but now you don't even have to.

It's a brilliant device with an almost iPad-matching screen, lightweight, micro SD card slot, solid (but not top tier) performance and you can get the 32GB version new from around 165.

If you pay to import a proprietary adapter it can also do HDMI output. I ditched my Nexus 7 for it and other than for games my iPad 4 barely even gets a look in anymore.

@Stranded87 - that's good to hear. I'm looking to get one too. I think it's probably the best for resolution/weight/price. I think it'll be perfect for reading PDFs.

What are folks' thoughts on Windows tablets? The in-laws' desktop fried last week and now they're looking at replacing with a tablet instead. They've got their eyes on an Asus Vivotab Smart which is going cheapo at the moment.

Having only experience of the ipad and android tablets, are Win8 tablets any good in comparison? They're only really going to use it to surf the net, check e-mails, watch online videos and use Office potentially. Should they consider the Galaxy Note 10.1 instead?
