How good is Vagrant Story?

Because I trust you people more than pretty much every review site.

I have $7 left on my US account, and was looking around on the PSN store. I saw Vagrant Story. The only jRPG's I enjoyed the last 10 years were Persona 3 and 4, because they were relatively simple and have original stories. I tried Resonance of Fate, which seemed complex just for complexity's sake, and FF13 which was too streamlined even for me.

My question: is Vagrant Story still a good RPG, with just the right amount of difficulty?

I wouldn't really call it an RPG myself. Which is probably why I quite like it. It's very good but Rock Hard if you can't get your head around the very unique fighting system.

I'm sure someone else can shed more light on it.

It's been years since I played it but I remember it as being very grindy. It's easy to get lost and monsters respawn every time you enter a room, so if you don't know your way around you'll be constantly frustrated with having to re-kill enemies while you're trying to find where to go. I never finished it, I got completely stuck and could never figure out how to progress any further.

Not as good as I remember it being; but then take my opinion with a pinch of salt as I do think a lot of PSOne games have aged badly

It defo is an RPG in my opinion. Very complex and rather perplexing battle system, beautiful visuals and ambiance for its time. Confusing story (it's Squaresoft after all). Takes a lot of time to beat. Considered a masterpiece then, yet have aged quite well. I'd only recommend it to a hardcore RPG enthusiast.

A bit hazy, I remember the weapon assembly and choice being a bit baffling at first but if you persevere it was fun... I think.

It's a good game. I have it on psp/Ps1. But there is an awful lot of die very quickly and have to replay half the section again. It can be very frustrating with such dated level design.

It's brilliant, but far from simple. Maybe try Grandia or Breath of Fire 4 first.

I'd call it an RPG, just, with a rythm action based battle mechanic, and weapons that level rather than your character. Oh, and annoying push/pull block puzzles scattered throughout.

Tried it on release, didn't enjoy it, tried it again a year back, and I still didn't have the rythm to progress. Very much a marmite game, but fully deserving of it's classic status, despite my fumblings. Still looks pretty decent.

Sounds like I was right not to buy it right away. Any other ideas on how to spend $7 on the PSN store? Anything goes.

Yeah, it's a terrible single player game.

If you liked Dark Souls you'll probably enjoy it, combat is a weird turn based style though.

Get Vagrant Story. It's brilliant, although as mentioned, very deep and complex. Still got one of my favourite video game plots too, and excellent antagonists with very grey motives.

I didn't like the combat system and so much of the game is battling. Ruined it for me personally, although I still love the cutscenes.

If you like Squaresoft, try Front Mission 3, FFIX and Parasite Eve 2. All very different games, but all very well made.

I played the very beginning of it a few days ago. (Up to the first save point). First impressions were very, very good and I look forward to playing it once I finish Trails in the Sky.

It must also have been quite the looker back in the day and the story has been introduced well so far.

The combat was a bit of a surprise it reminded me of Hybrid Heaven. (Fallout 3 is probably the closest modern comparison). Although I obviously have not figured out how it works properly yet.

I found it difficult to get into and couldn't give it enough time to really try. Waste of money for me but I probably would have known that if I'd done my research!

It's good if you like RPG/Action games. I remember it being a bit grindy and some enemies can be a real chore to fight. The graphical style though is very good and still holds up for a PSOne title.

Actually, thinking back about it I might have used a walkthrough to find out how to progress. I seem to recall there was a certain maze in the game comprising several rooms with changing layout, or something. I understand how people might have been put off by it.

I really didn't like it back in the day. Inaccessible and punishing. I'm sure it's rewarding if you put some effort into it, but wasn't for me.

The combat was pretty good but there was far too much messing around in menus. Still a great game though, one of Square best. If you haven't played FFIX that's probably a better game though, and definitely easier to get into.

Vagrant Story is good if you're willing to deal with some convoluted systems.

This forum should be collectively ashamed for not pointing out that the excellent Front Mission 3 is on PSN.

In summary: Get Front Mission 3, it's aged very well and it's easier to get your head around if you still play turn based strategy games and RPGs.
