Then again, Port-au-Prince isn't the same sort of place as London or New York.We see little in common with it. Most people have never been there. Most people know something of New York, whether we've been there or not, so we're interested.
It's the novelty of the situation that's generating the interest I think.

It's more that it's effecting millions of people in the richest country in the world in one of the most populous and wealthy areas than for the 'novelty'.

Anything happening to one of the most iconic cities in the world is obviously going to cause a stir. Had it have just been Carolina or somewhere that was getting hit, I doubt there would be anywhere near as much coverage.

    Affecting! Not effecting, affecting!
Alternatively, it's had an effect on millions of people.

    Tch!
The pedantry levels around here aren't what they used to be. Somebody would have picked that up in seconds back in the old days.

I got my power and cable service back today - woohoo!!! But a lot of people are still pretty effed up.

Not too, too bad around here - lots of downed trees and branches, but thankfully I'm about 5 minutes away from the ocean so not much concern over flooding. I did have an entire tree in my back yard uprooted, taking the brand new fence we just put up with it! That was quite the pisser.

There was one point during the storm where I thought it could get real, but that didn't last more than an hour or so. I was too much of a girl to stay outside too long in it, though. There are so many trees around here that I thought one might fall on my head.

I'm pretty fortunate, because according to my town's website, half the town is still in the dark. Schools are closed all week - lucky bastards! Well, not lucky if they have no power, or are swimming across their living room.

    They've cancelled Halloween, though. :(

I had to - what with the perception that all Americans were a bunch of nancies because we were afraid of a little ole' thousand-mile-wide hurricane with 90mph winds, torrential rain and flooding like we've never seen. That's a walk in the park! We were out with the dog playing fetch, it was so mild.

Certainly no worse than a spot of rain. You might need an umbrella!

Sure it's a little flooding, I meant it in that Manhattan isn't exactly huge. It's an area that doesn't have the infrastructure to deal with it so it'll be a lot worse off. As for predictions, I don't think they were that far off the mark, although there are hardly 11 foot walls of water crashing through the streets.
Because that isn't how a storm surge works and I'm not sure who explained it to you like that, but that certainly isn't what anyone around here was expecting.

It rises gradually with the tide, but at much higher levels and more quickly than normal (obviously). It isn't like a tsunami, which is more what you're describing.

Sunday's marathon has been cancelled (just hours after Bloomberg said it would still go ahead, with a route running through devastated boroughs...)
