New York mayor urging citizens to evacuate!

Rail, subway, bus and schools all closed!

    Airports closing!

Non-essential government on the Eastern seaboard shutting down!

11ft wall of water predicted to rage through the streets!

20 million people directly in the path of the worst storm on historical record!

Is it media bullshit or actual general apocalypse-esque event? Will George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg reteam for the sequel? Will it just blow through with a few minor issues? Will this actually be massively, hugely bad and I'll look like a supremely flippant arsehole?

    Stay tuned!

I'm going to go on record saying that it'll be no-where near as bad as it's made out to be.

Also, Obama and Romney will try to turn the storm to their advantage.

    It'll be okay, fat floats.

A map is like comparing velocity and speed.

Maybe if they hadn't called it Sandy, they wouldn't be looking at 11ft of seawater deposited everywhere. Shoulda called it Hurricane Sherbert - fun for all.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

We failed over our data centres to another location last night, so got to get in early to make sure we are up and running before markets open. Also have to cover US trading from London so could be here late too...

Brought my laptop to work in case of gaming opportunities later :-)

I have a friend in Sacramento, a little tornado whipped through their neighbourhood last week. First one he'd ever seen in that area for 30-odd years. Within about 100 yards of his house! He said it was fucking awesome.

The mini-tornado that hit Brum was pretty cool. Aside from the tree destruction, obviously.

How are people to evacuate if all the means of transport are closed?

Think they have chartered busses? That's what it sounds like from a few twitter posts I've seen.

In the context of what recently happened in Italy when those seismologists were jailed for underestimating the extent of damage, I know what side of caution I'd err if I was an apocolyptologist.

But from the images on CNN, it looks like only Los Angeles will be unaffected.

If it's just showing the map, stick with it, someone getting battered by rain / wind will show up eventually.

Excellent couple of messages from this live coverage: "All Atlantic City casinos closed" and "(some governor) Don't be stupid, get out".

Reminds me of The Long Kiss Goodnight:

Samantha: Easy, sport. I got myself outta Beirut once, I think I can get outta New Jersey.
Mitch: Yeah? Well, don't be so sure. Others have tried and failed. The entire population, in fact.

It'll likely be somewhere between STORMPOCALYPSE 2012!!! and just a regular bad storm, but I suspect we'll see some deaths (there were already upwards of 60 in the Caribbean) so I'd rather not be flip about it.

Still a while before the eye hits isn't it? One thing is for sure....any who stay behind won't be ignored like N'Orleans. Or I'd like to think not anyway.

You can tell it's an American channel, what with the metal playing in the background to the radar map. lol

I just can't imagine the BBC doing that.
