On the other hand he is a whiney prick who uses his own taste as the yardstick for excellence. Which is exactly as it should be. I started reading EG because the writers said what they thought or at least it appeared that way. Halo got an 8 because the reviewer thought it deserved that.

Registered 10 years agoHe is the best columnist writing for EG at the moment. It's almost like the EG of old when the reviews were scathing and the opinions brutal.

Registered 6 years agoThe Lost Humanity articles really are very enjoyable to read. One of them lost me a bit, but the most recent one about sneaking into his families' houses was hilarious.
The gaming press needs more opinion pieces that don't amount to putting a score to a game. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

Registered 6 years agowell there goes a bit of entertainment from here. article amended due to a complaint? unless that statement was actionably defamatory then it should have stood. -

Registered 10 years agoRab is great, consolevania was awesome and this whole debacle is casting a shitty light over all involved and making everyone look bad.
Good on Rab for calling it and it's a shame he felt he had to resign due to legal action for quoting something someone said in public. This signature intentionally left blank.

Surely someone proof read it and gave it the OK to be published.
There goes my brief sojourn on the EG front page. -

Registered 3 years agoI fail to see how him quoting a message from that particular person and then questioning their motives is libellous but I understand why EG felt they had to amend the article. Still fucking scandalous though, basically reinforces the point he was making x millions. A corrupt dirty industry, anyone who tries to criticise gets slapped down.
Journalists? Bullshit.
Oh and the original article is on the neogaf forums. If you're on Twitter then John Walker (@botherer) has also linked the original story.

Registered 6 years agooh right i did manage to read it just before it got edited. This is fucking mental. The statement was in no way defamatory. It a bloody quote from her tweet for fuck sake. The comments after are based on the author (rab) opinion, again menaing its not defamatory as the opinion is not based on malice. EG editing this is a totally cowardly move and ive in a matter of seconds lost a ton of respect for them -

Registered 4 years agoWow this is well fucked up. I just got chatting to a few mates on Facebook about the original article saying eurogamer was one of the sites with integrity. There's goes my respect
Edit: I'd just like to say sorry for questioning Eurogamers integrity after reading Tom's blog post. I really should have had more faith.

Registered 6 years agoThis is a real shame. I don't blame EG. Whether or not any legal action would have been successful, defending it can be very costly.
I hope this gains enough momentum to make some waves. I liked Rab's writing and it fit well with Eurogamer's style. As I said, games writing needs more pieces like Lost Humanity.
It's things like this and the issues mentioned in Lost Humanity that make me want to start my own games site. If I did, it'd probably be shit though. I've never even written a review. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

Registered 7 years agoIndeed. I can't understand how quoting publicly available tweets could be libellous (but then I'm not a lawyer). Ah well, let the bully win then - far less hassle.

Registered 11 years agoThe most disgraceful thing about this for me is that a supposed "journalist" is willing to go to these measures to silence a fellow writer. What sites does Wainwright write for (try saying that after a few beers) other than her own blog? I want to make a serious effort to avoid every last one of them. -

Registered 10 years agoAs i said in the comments. Fighting a Libel case in the UK is very expensive and with very little chance of recovering costs from the other party when they won EG probably decided it wasn't worth fighting and withdrew the relevant paragraph.
Unfortunately the cat is now out of the bag and riding along with the bolted horse so closing the barn doors at this point is worthless. This signature intentionally left blank.
