Mike Singleton dies of cancer. I'm sure lots of you remember Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge.

    Only 61, cancer.

Yes, I remember. I'm 40 now. Life is short. Those games bamboozled me at the time but I remember them and Mike as if it was yesterday. Sad news.

Lords of midnight was excellent. I remember reading an interview with Mike, probably in Crash, where he came across as a good guy. Sad news indeed.

Midwinter actually made me feel uneasy when stood on the edge of a cliff because it was such a new experience. Brilliant games and way ahead of their time.

Despite not really understanding how to play the games at the time, I still saw them as something unique and very special. Thanks, Mike.

Fuck. RIP. Awesome games, ahead of their time, no question.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise half of them are stupider than that

Very sad, loved Lords of Midnight, was probably my most played Speccy game after Chaos.

    Are you me?

Those were great days. Like I said in the comments thread on the front page yesterday, Lords of Midnight really stunned me. I didn't play it until Crash! gave it away (and I'm pretty sure my copy of Chaos came with Your Sinclair: Speccy covertapes were the best), I remember loading it up two or three times without really "getting it". Then, it suddenly clicked, and I furtively stayed up most of the night whilst hoping my mum wouldn't see the light from the TV in my room. It really felt like entering another world. I don't think I played another game that gave me quite the same feeling until Morrowind many, many years later.

Mike Singleton and Julian Gollop are probably my biggest gaming heroes from those days.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

I remember me an my mate Simon first getting our hands on a spectrum and one of the first games we tried was Lords of Midnight.
Luxor was utterly invigorated and we were utterly baffled and loaded up a shooty game instead that we understood.
We came back to it, though - we had to, he only had about five games. For the first time we were obliged to RTFM and gradually we understood. Played it to death in the end, it was fantastic - never managed a military victory, but did manage the hobbit-like one.

RIP Mike. You made a special dent in large chunks of my childhood and taught me the benefits that could be reaped from RTFM =)
