I hate F2P

F2P is the most obnoxious, cruel, greedy, shameful, embarrassing and frankly disgusting way to monetise the beauty that is gaming.

Gaming is about immersion, it's about forgetting your real life and real problems and going somewhere else, either by yourself or, in MMOs, with others. Taking someone out of that and telling them to spend $10 to buy more bullets or unlock the next level is betrayal; the player has gotten into your game and you tear him out of it into the real world, the very thing he has paid you to forget.

I hate F2P, I hate it with all my heart, I really do. It betrays games, it spits all over their meaning and pisses over their soul.

Pft. How old are you? By what you're saying, probably old enough to remember the time when games used to be like that. But now, a whole new generation of gamers is growing up who think this is what gaming is like. Pretty soon now, you'll start sounding lke one of those old timers who complain about the youth today and how the world was so much better before the war. Actually, you sound lke that right now.

I am, of course, allowing myself to make these scathing comments because I'm like that as well.

People like you allow this betrayal to take place! The betrayal of our beautiful games by charging for things that are completely optional!

    I spit on you.

Just wait until they come up with coin slot operated consoles. That'll really separate the men from the boys.

That must've wrecked the bristles, tarring every single F2P game with just one brush.

For what it's worth, there are some bloody brilliant Free to Play games out there that don't require a penny. The ones that do it well let you have useless cosmetic upgrades or perhaps early access to certain things, but it's never required. It can be a fantastic, very profitable business model that entirely removes the monetary barrier for entry.

Sure, I agree that when it's done wrong it's not good. If it keeps reminding you "BUY STUFF!" when you're trying to get into it, that's not very professional or wise. But that certainly isn't ALL F2P games.

I like this idea. Unlock 1000 forum posts for 5, 10 new threads for 10. Fruit would be bankrupt and homeless within a week!

I can't stand f2p either. That and online gaming are killing the industry.

That and that and Nintendo and their casual hand waving crap

You put words to my thoughts.

I would like to add to that: The way DLC is actively sold in Dirt 3 on PlayStation 3, annoys me so very much. I cannot get 100% completed on a set of racing events, because there is DLC in that set I have not purchased and completed. I have already paid full price for the game, I would like to play that game without interference.

That ridge racer game looks like being ruined by F2P. We have to make a point and not go anywhere near it.
  • Deleted user 12 April 2013 14:47:45
Based on no information about how the in game purchases are structured, how is it ruining it?

    F2P isn't automatically bad.

How dare these business arseholes make a games based on where the biggest revenue streams come from. What bastards. They should go bankrupt for the love of making games, that's what they should do.

To be honest, the F2P model is pretty much perfect for someone like me. F2P only becomes problematic when you want to sit and play a game for several hours and progress through it as quickly as you possibly can. Whereas, for a racing game such as Ridge Racer, I'm just happy to sit and noodle for a couple of tracks every now and again then quit out after I get bored. Being able to do that without paying 40 quid for the privilege is a good scenario - and I've yet to pay a single real penny for any extra content or unlocks or some such. I've also yet to personally encounter a freemium game that I couldn't do this with. Change the perspective from "MUST WIN AND COMPLETE" to "play to have a bit of fun" and 95% of freemium issues vanish.

@Aargh. Payment for 'repairs', 'boosts', that suggests in very strong terms that the difficulty will be weighted to require you to buy to progress.

In most cases, yes it is.

F2P where I can play a game in it's entirety without interruption & microtransactions just speed things up a bit (XP doublers for example) or offer cosmetic changes are all good in my book, but I'd still rather invest product and know I've got the *full* experience (for want of a better term).
  • Deleted user 12 April 2013 15:07:18
At a guess, booster packs mean unlocking extra tracks without earning them and repair kits are something to speed up repair time. Which is absolutely standard for the F2P model and, as pointed out above, nothing that genuinely causes an issues if you're not a "MUST 100% THIS GAME AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE THEN MOVE ONTO THE NEXT" player.

If it's glib it must be an easy argument to dismantle.

Tell you what, I'll list the F2P/freemium games I've played, you list yours, we'll see how it matches up.

There are games that take the piss, but they're easily noticeable and easily avoided. And they're almost all farmville clones.

I'll list mine too, but there's a 0.99 charge to reveal each one if you want to see them now.
