Registered 3 years agoThis is interesting. I think some of it is bitter exaggeration, but I know from working in the press myself that ad sales drive absolutely everything. It may not be the case that they physically (metaphorically speaking) lean on you… but you’ll be thinking hard if your article/review is sitting next to the hugely expensive full page ad for the game you just panned.
But surely that’s obvious to everyone? -

Registered 8 years ago@mowgli I agree with this sentiment. I see single player COD like the best modern war action movie we never got. (instead of that Battle LA crap). And online multi-player for me lasted about 10 million times longer than any other game (excl. BF games). If you cuss COD you are an elitist nob.
Instead moan about other high score reviews for games with zero dev effort and fun. ...like. ... not aware of any (but i just read EG). -
I like this guy's reviews here, but he loses points for saying CoD deserves 8s and 9s, when the series couldn't get any more derivative if it tried.

Registered 5 years agoI never played the multiplayer which I know is what its really about but CODs single player bored the shit out of me.
Walk to this star on the map, watch this, shoot this bloke, walk to this bit, watch, shoot, walk, scripted fight taptaptaptap, walk, shoot, watch, put a bomb there, run away, watch, shoot, walk.... its all very cinematic but its so scripted that it doesn't involve thinking. -

Registered 6 years agoNothing new though is it? He's only saying what we all already know. I've worked in press (not gaming to be fair but newspapers) and the simple fact is no matter what a publication tells you ad revenue does run your ship a hell of a lot, big spenders basically tell you what they want you to do and unless you feel comfortable losing a big client therefore big revenue (very few are comfortable with that) you bend over backwards to do what they want. It's why I never take reviews seriously.
Even with EG who I know are adamant nothing dodgy ever goes on (and I like to believe that's the case) I just can't ever truly trust them because I know the power of a pulled ad campaign or lost client.
