As if by magic, it is now working. I guess I just had to complain about it. :)

    Finished!

Utterly, utterly brilliant. GOTY by a mile. I hope its creators get very, very rich.

What kind of game is this? Old school GTA?

    Flight sim?

Judging from the few minutes I spent with it at the expo it seems old school GTA-ish.

It's not open world like GTA is or was. It's set, tight levels. It's kind of like a puzzle game the way you have to figure out the levels.

Its a bit like a puzzler in that you need to figure out how best to clear a level but pure action and reflexes in execution.

I've been having issues with my copy where the music won't play, which goes some way to totally ruining the experience :-(

It's a top down shooter with a few melee weapons thrown in. If you're prone to frustration, don't bother because you die in one hit whereas sometimes enemies don't and dying means restarting the "floor" that you're on from the very beginning.

It's visually and sonically interesting but unless your into the whole Dark Souls "die a bunch until you win" mechanic then I wouldn't bother. It's for people who enjoy being punished by their games rather than using them to relax. Each to their own and all that :)

Having only played Demon's Souls briefly, I'd say comparisons with Hotline Miami are short of the mark. The only real commonality are that you die a lot in both. Thing is, you instantly respawn in Hotline so it's not a problem.

    An overview:

Each level consists of a bunch of rooms crawling with guards (say 10-20). You have to take them all out. The difficulty stems from you having as much health as them, or less in some cases. You die in one hit basically. To succeed, you study their routes and learn which badguy is covering which other badguy's ass. Then you strike. It gets hairy if you're sloppy such as shooting a shotgun near a crowded room or get spotted snapping someone's neck.

For me it's like oldskool GTA meets the old Commandos games, all doused in 80s neon, synths and electro. I personally didn't find it that difficult and I didn't find it frustrating once. There are semi-bosses that take some perseverance but once you nail them you feel like Jason Bourne.

I can't recommend it enough. And for 3.50 or whatever it'll be in the sale, you must buy it.

Ah i see thanks for the impressions guys.

I will pass, i have never been a fan of repeating bits of games i have already completed, i am a total quick-save addict. Don't think i've ever finished a GTA because i eventually get to a mission which i have to replay more than 5 times and give up.

For some reason the part of my brain that is supposed to like "achievements" after doing something difficult is switched off. Although i remember being incredibly pleased with myself for finishing the witcher 2 which was rock.

Nooo, TH! You HAVE to buy it!

You can't quick-save, but you'll only have to repeat the floor on which you die, not the whole level.

Honestly, I didn't think that I'd have the patience for this one, but it's more of a high-adrenaline puzzler which is FUN to repeat until you get it right.

Lots of 'fist-pumps' at the end of each section, too - although that might just be me.

not really. You adapt to both but I wouldn't say any give a massive advantage over the other.

I just bought this. Is it currently bugged? I'm not getting any music and there was an error on start-up.

    :/
  • Deleted user 26 December 2012 03:43:52
@Progguitarist May want to restart if the sound is borked as the soundtrack is excellent.

Re the error on start up. I seem to recall it takes issue with certain libraries of the Dot.NET framework but it never seemed to make any difference for me running it.

Does this always show the intro / tutorial for everyone else? It's a bit tedious that it doesn't go straight into the start screen.

Sounds like you are starting a new game each time rather than selecting the continue option further down the menu.

BTW - I have had and fixed the sound issue mentioned earlier in this thread. Go to where you have the game installed and reinstall the ms distro within it (can't remember what it is called).

Seems it might be because I was pressing enter to skip the intro? Don't see an option to skip it though it worked by pressing escape.

I think this is a Hotline Miami review, but I'm not sure.

Ant other lefties playing this? I find I'm really struggling with the controls.

Now on the one hand that could be because I've not played a game using keyboard and mouse controls in a number of years. But it could also be because I'm playing on a Mac keyboard and the arrow keys are pretty tiny.

    WASD doesn't work when you're left-handed unfortunately.

Probably a bit crazy, but I played the whole thing with a 360 controller - on the PC.

Can you do something similar on a Mac?

It doesn't sound very deep, and sounds very repetitive. Is it basically just one joke, with a brutal difficulty?

But 10/10?! The trailer does not look like a 10/10 game, it looks like a 6/10 Flash game.

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

Yup, plug in a 360 controller and download the free Tattiebogle (or whayever it's called!) driver some guy made, should work fine if the game supports the controller.

    @Tiger_Walts

"Do you know anything about techno?"

    "No."

"Me neither. Here, let me play you some 80s synth pop."

    :D

What's that from? And what's the speccy twat from The Inbetweeners doing there at the end?

@TarickStonefire after 10 mins I thought it was excellent, after 30 mins I gave up and haven't been back to it since. It's a wonderful looking 7/10 for me.
