Feed is not working for me. Let's hope they spent more on the suit than the website support.

Has anyone done the Bumgardner delayed by wind joke yet?

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

  • Deleted user 9 October 2012 14:19:12
Yeah, probably the embedding or the shit it's being embedded in breaking it.

It sounds cool not sure about the first man to break the sound barrier claim though as I am sure Joe Kittinger broke the sound barrier on his jump. I guess it depends on just what they are calling the speed of sound as I think Kittinger got up to 614Mph which is slower than this dive but still fast enough to break the speed of sound in the upper atmosphere.

Edit: Ok did a bit more reading and it seems Kittinger did not break the sound barrier. Although the speed of sound is lower in the upper atmosphere from the height he jumped it's still about 680Mph.
I'd been wondering the same thing about this - I'm sure I'd heard Kittinger's jump (which was a spectacular piece of ballsy "we've sort of got the technology to achieve this, LET'S GO!" 1960sness) had broken the speed of sound.
Even though he apparently didn't, it was still hells of cool.
It's certainly cool. It's actually tricky to get the footage on youtube without people having arsed about with it but the below is pretty good. Starts's from around 2 minutes 20 seconds though there is some pretty cool footage before that as well.

The bit where he actually drops away from the balloon is amazing.

I note that they're showing the time in GMT, which everyone on the internet is interpreting as the UK launch time, but since we're on GMT+1 at the minute does that mean it's not happening till 18:30 here?

What's the contingency plan for a no jump? He could end up anywhere if he goats down in that thing.

    Yes it's 18:30 BST.

    Probably won't happen today though.

I know it's all marketing but I can't help but admire Red Bull for the money they pump into activities that are basically batshit insane.

Is breaking the sound barrier relative to the speed he's falling at?

Just that I was under the impression that terminal velocity is a law of physics.
