Seriously, they've been around since 1935. France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Italy, pull your fucking shit together and buy some; your roads suck dicks.

I'm pretty sure cats have had eyes since well before 1935.

    I blame phAge.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Shit - I was going to do a phAge joke earlier but struggled with the 'joke' bit as per usual. WHY DON'T THE REST OF EUROPE HAVE CAT-BELLS?
  • Deleted user 8 October 2012 23:48:32

For the same reason we no longer have full colour black, blue and red fire extinguishers (so we can tell what type of fire extinguisher from a 100feet), 'cos Europe is fucking stupid.

Pompeii has marble cats eyes in the roads and pavements, clever.

Shame the Romans built it next to a fucking volcano.

I've actually always wondered the same - here in Geneve if it rains, the road markings disappear. It's obviously not lack of cash limiting the Swiss, so no idea what it is. The paint is shit too though - it's about a mm thick, and isn't raised at all so you can't see it from an angle. Maybe they just think it's more fun this way?

Yeah, it's not even like the roads are poor quality, especially in Germany. Driving a couple of hundred km at night is literally taking your life into your hands, and they make UK cars nerf their headlights with those stick on things, which doesn't help matters in the slightest.

Massively frustrating, pointless and dangerous ommission.

I guess that I don't even know what you're talking about proves your point - where are they in the UK, on the medial strip?

They're highly reflective dots that are inserted into little rubber housings that are embedded into the road lines. They're far more visible for a greater distance that lines alone. Just like catching a cats eyes in your headlights.

Can I +1 the "what are you on about?"
Is it those little reflective "cat eye" thingies embeded in the asphalt at the side of the road, so the whitelines will light up with their reflection at night?

On B roads there's little posts every 100m with a cat eye reflector on it, they sort of serve the same purpose.
On Motorways we've got lights up. Although in recent years it's become accepted that perhaps lighting up all roads in the country from dusk until dawn might be a tad wasteful of energy. So I think they go out between midnight and some early hour of the morning.

It's not all that bad driving on a dark motorway without the guidance of these cat eye nubbins though. You managed in the UK for decades before they were brought in.

Heh, yeah, I know what cat eyes are (same term in Germany), I just wasn't sure where they are on road in the UK other than ours which are just on the reflector posts on the sides. Roads themselves are only marked with them usually if there's road works.

Anyway, good question. I hate driving at night, especially when it rains.

No one was driving at 160kph in 1935, and no, the reflectors you're talking about are a pale, shit immitation.

It's because we invented them and everyone else would rather die in a burning wreck than give us acknowledgement.
