    First impressions...

    EPIC WALL OF TEXT ALERT

Love it so far. Pandaria as a continent is just different enough that it feels fresh, whilst being similar enough to still feel cohesive within the larger tapestry of the existing zones and artstyle. The music is awesome and adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Phasing seems to be less overused this time around as opposed to Cata, which seriously abused it. There's some interesting new races introduced early on which have some good lore potential. I was worried at first that the massive amount of XP required to ding would make it feel like a slog to level, but thankfully the rewards from quests are just enough that you feel you're making progress.

My ilevel 378 gear is still relevant several hours in, so it looks like they've rectified the problem of endgame gear from the previous expansion being rendered instantly obsolete by greens (only took them four expansions!).

The artstyle is brilliantly suited to the new theme and despite obviously not being state of the art, it still looks gorgeous.

The only thing so far that is a bit "meh" is the age-old problem of a lack of quest variety. It's still kill X of Y, collect X of Y. I shouldn't really have expected much, but I sort of hoped there would be something to shake things up a little.

There's a noticeable increase in the amount of voicework, with plenty of little dramatic scenes peppered between quests. Good for lore junkies.

It feels very much like a response to complaints that Cata was too focused on casuals/newbies. This is pure endgame. As a player since launch day, this is a good thing. Cata always struck me as something of a futile gesture, coming so far into the lifespan of the game.

Anyone else noticed that Varian Jr has been getting a lot of attention in the last couple of expansions? I wonder if we are being prepared for a replacement Alliance king between now and the end of the game in 2 expansion's time.

Seems odd that the Pandarens are supposedly a unified, neutral, peace-loving race but seem all too eager to tell you to go and kill stuff and take sides. Though I guess having been isolated for so long they haven't had any reason not to be unified in their beliefs. Minor quibble there. A lore thing more than anything else.

The Pandarens were present at the founding of Ogrimmar? I don't remember that from previous games (again, lore quibbles)...

Pretty much agree with Dark above. It's the same old WoW but the art is still so good it looks ace Imo.

Initial impressions of the story - it doesn't seem to be childish cutsie poo pandas as such, its darker than I expected with a focus on war. It obv still has a sense of humour too.

    Enjoying.

Sounds good. I will give it a try in a couple of weeks maybe when the initial rush in the new zones has died down a bit. Not sure which class to play though, will have to play around a bit.

    First impressions -

Looks like shit. Seriously, I get that it's an 'art style' and all that but it really does look like a seven year old game.

Like the new talent system. Talent trees and glyphs before were pointless; you took a prescribed build or you gimped yourself. This way actually feels like personal choice and playstyle matters.

Questing is same old same old. If I could be 90 now without having to arse about collecting insect parts, I would.

Overall, it's WoW. Nothing's really changed, but I wasn't really expecting (or wanting) it to.

Totally agree with this. All the QQ of "zomg they're dumbing it down" completely missed the actual damn point.

Was kinda hoping for a bigger jump in item level on gear. Most of the way to 89 and only beginning to swap stuff out.

Started a monk and at first didnt like it/didn't know what I was doing, but once I got a few abilities later on I found it much more fun.

Monk tanking is hilarious, you are basically throwing around barrels of ale and punching people in the face.

Sounds like typical tanking in Middlesbrough on a Saturday night.

I actually like that. The last few expansions have been far to eager to render all of your hard-earned raiding purples redundant in five minutes with crappy little mobs dropping greens with insane stats. A more gradual ramping up is much more welcome, and saves time endlessly faffing about in menus every five minutes comparing gear stats.

One more thought further to my post above: It doesn't feel right to me that some of the new dungeons are immediately accessible through LFG. It sort of messes up the story progression. Surely a better way would be to keep them locked until you've reached the relevant point in the story? By making them available out of context they sort of lose their impact as a big climax to a questline.

I also find it a bit odd that the events from the Theramore scenario are referenced right from the start, but they've increased the gear-gating so it's not accessible (speaking as someone who didn't try it in the brief pre-mop window that it was available). Given it's effectively a prologue to MoP's story, it would have made more sense to start with a quest for that dropping in your log instead of immediately sending you to Pandaria.

@darkmorgado Not so much a gradual ramping up as a no quest loot for the first couple of levels.

Have there been changes to rested XP?

It used to give 100% bonus XP for one level at maximum "charge". I've been logged out for a good few months (in SW), and yet my rested XP has just ended only 64% to level 86

I don't think the rested bonus builds up at all after you hit max level, so its only a night or so's worth.

    dammit

oh well. As long as I beat the OH to 90, that's what counts (yes, we compete over our progress)

If I remember correctly rested XP used to generate 150% of your level

I'm utterly fucking done with gaming but WoW easily holds the title for hours-on-one-game for me so i'm tempted to dip my toe back in and make this the one game i still play.

If I add up my /played across all chars, it comes close to over a year of playtime.

Since launch in 2005 admittedly, but it's still a fucking eye-opening stat when you see it.
