After my recent reformat I took the steam route. No problems.

Cheers :) I know I don't have to use the Steam one, but I just prefer it that way. If it wasn't possible, it wouldn't have been that bad.

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

Had fun earlier. F2P makes this viable for me, really. Don't love it (yet?), but am having fun. Lowered the resolution and i can get most things medium/high, which is nice.

enjoy playing in squads. Simply cannot aim.

Strapping a scope on the gun really makes a different. I had the same problem in the beginning after I put a scope on the gun I became more lethal.

    I have a scope. Doesn't help ;)

It's more not playing FPS on PC for about 5 years. Just not used to it yet.

It'll click, I had the same problem at first but you'll get used to it. A gaming mouse does help, even a relatively cheap one

The NV sights are awesome, give em a try. They limit you at range but I find them so good at medium and closer.

What kind of numbers are playing this? I had a guy tell me last night that it's finished and that the community are abandoning the game already.

No idea, is there a way to tell in game? If the game does start struggling for numbers, could they just merge the servers together?

Although I imagine it was just the usual internet hyperbole. Player numbers will be much smaller than those at launch but pretty much every multiplayer game has the same problems.

No idea on actual numbers, but it's definitely shrunk since launch. That was inevitable though. There's still a few high pop servers, Miller being one of them, though server merges are planned for the really quiet ones I think.

Game is still very much in its infancy though. With the massive list of changes and additions they want to make in the next six months alone, it's going to be a very different game by the end of it. Can't wait to see where it ends up in a year or two.

Well, we were arguing about Dust 514 and he's a deluded fanboy. So deluded in fact, that he believes Dust is a better game.

He pointed to the Steam stats which say that yesterdays peak login was 9 thousand or so.

Not everyone logs in via steam, do they? And is that 9000 online at once or 9000 online during the whole day?

The only worry I have is whether the f2p model will actually be profitable for them in the long term.

In any case, I bought some SC the other night and would like some recommendations for a new pew pew!

I tend to use Heavy Assault. What LMG would you guys recommend?

Not sure which LMG I use, it came with Alpha Squad. SC spent on the HA is probably better directed towards launchers. Lots of people loving the Annihilator as it locks on to both air and ground, makes for an excellent squad weapon in groups, though it does less damage than the other launchers. AA/AG lock on launchers are worth having too, but if you're getting both you may as well get the Annihilator.

Seconded on annihaltor , that lock on along scares off some pilots. Or the lasher (disco ball gun) but can only be used in certain situations eg bio lab or for keeping guys contained in a building away from windows. the lasher is currently my fav weapon. Loads of assists with it as it does splash damage but you will not get many direct kills with it.

Still no mention of a deployed mine counter or fixing the barrel height of the engi turret.

Not happy with the nerfs to the Magrider and Saron while everyone else gets buffs. We were competitive due to manoeuvrability and range before, not sure how those changes will stack up.

Some nice changes otherwise. The nerfs can be fixed quite easily if required so the meatier changes are very welcome as part of the overall package :)

Incidentally, with a Radeon 6950, does anyone know if I am better off running at 1080p with loads of AA or at a higher native res and no AA?

Depends what you mean by 'better off', I suppose. Assuming you mean stable frame rates, could go either way depending on your screen resolution. I don't remember off the top of my head whether you can select the amount of AA in planetside, I don't recall being able to. What are your options at native res, and what AA do you have set now?

Draw distance slider & whatever performance improvements they add in will hopefully have a measurable impact. I'd get the patch, see how it fares in a big ish fight and then tweak your settings.

Yeah it's going to have to be suck it and see I suppose. Monitor is 1920x1200 and normally I run at that res with max on everything except the big shinies.

Get around 35 fps at the moment which is fine but if the patch adds a bit of draw distance I want to take advantage as much as possible. Happy to lose some prettiness if it stops heavies popping in to view 25m away already locked on to me...

Will do a trawl around the usual sites and see if there is a rule of thumb for these sorts of things.

I'm pretty sure unit draw distance isn't based on any personal settings but server ones. Basically the more people there are in an area the closer you'll have to be before people render.

Back in Beta at tech plants apparently you used to get situations where you'd have to be 2-3 meters away from someone before they'd appear.

Is this the patch that optimizes the game?

It has optimisations in it, including the addition of a draw distance slider. Nearly all patches have had some performance boosts in some form or another; waiting for the 'magic patch that fixes everything' means you'll be waiting a long time. If you're having performance problems, what system are you running?

They have promised a fairly significant performance upgrade this patch, at least.
