Good list of albums this year, I reckon. We have, in no particular order:

Richard Hawley for Standing at the Sky's Edge
    Plan-B - Ill Manors
    Alt-J - An Awesome Wave
    Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again
Lianne La Havas - Is Your Love Big Enough?
    Roller Trio - Roller Trio
    Field Music - Plumb
    Jessie Ware - Devotion
The Maccabees - Given To The Wild
    Ben Howard - Every Kingdom
Sam Lee - Ground of Its Own, and
    Django Django - Django Django

Apparently, Alt-J and Roller Trio are some sort of jazz bands. I've also never heard of Ben Howard or Sam Lee, but I'm glad Django Django got the nod, and hopefully Richard Hawley will have more luck this time.

You've never heard of Ben Howard? I thought he was pretty famous to be honest. He's also very, very good. His cover of Call Me Maybe is actually really fucking good, and that takes some effort.

    Get bent.

I've heard of two of those.

Guess I'm not as hip as I thought I was.

Actually, come to think of it a friend did play Ben Howard's album to me. Wasn't that impressed to be honest.

You should definitely listen to a few more of them then. As I mentioned above, I'm really quite into Django Django at the moment. Richard Hawley is always value for money, and I like what I've heard from Michael Kiwanuka. Ditto Field Music. Actually I recall being pleasantly surprised by a Maccabees track recently, which was remarkable as I usually am bored by their stuff, so I may need to check that out. I've not heard (or seen) Ill Manors, but if it's anything like Strickland Banks I need to check it out myself.

Alt-j or Django Django please. Although, the whole thing is a joke. You can only nominate yrself. And you have to pay to do so. Bullshit.

My money is on Alt-J. Especially if the size of their audience at Bestival was anything to go by.

Added videos of their latest singles to the OP (except for Sam Lee who doesn't seem to do anything as bourgeois as singles, so you've got the album opener there). Looks like Roller Trio are the token jazz band and Sam Lee is the token folk act.

I really like alt-J, their style is very interesting. Like Django Django, they've been on 6Music a lot over the past year. Don't really know much about them other than that they are from Leeds and that Alt+J on a Mac gives you a triangle symbol.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

I never realised it was self nominated.
I haven't listened to any of these albums. Oh well, back to my cave.

I'd only heard of Richard Hawley & The Maccabees but I've listened to some of those links and quite like what I've heard of some. Jessie Ware is closest to my sort of thing but am definitely intrigued by Alt-J and Django Django. Ben Howard is just doing the whole acoustic Singer Songwriter thing that no-one's done better than City & Colour of late.

I also didn't realise this. Doesn't this slightly make a mockery of the whole thing?

If it's true, it's shocking. I thought it was supposed to be picked by a panel, but who knows.

The shortlist is chosen by a panel of musicians, music execs and journalists, IIRC.

Is that how it works?! I did wonder why they were using a capital delta as their logo. Fuckin' macheads.

There's an interesting set of interviews up with the lead singer which I found quite enlightening. Turns out he sounds quite normal when he talks, though he doesn't believe he's putting on an accent when he sings. Also, while they met at Leeds Uni, they're currently based in Cambridge, of all places.

    Also, Song for Razz?

Edit: Interviews, not videos. Well, they are - interviews in video form. But the fact they're interviews is the pertinent point.

Heh. They have another song called "Tesselate", which, aside from bring a great word, would also suit Razz's need to couple with everything. Although I guess those days are over now.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Ah, missed it completely. I'm glad Alt-J won - from barely having heard of them a few weeks ago, they've definitely grown on me.

I stumbled on them in spotify's 'newest additions' playlist near the start of the year (a quick check says may 28th, heh), recommended them to a friend on the basis of him liking radiohead and thought nothing more of it. didn't realise they were new and upcoming heh.

Not too keen on Alt-J, but they are definitely better than The XXZzzzzzz.

Django Django are great too, saw them playing on their tour about 6 months ago, you could feel big things were coming for them. Seemed like nice guys too.
