    So my website is hosted with godaddy and my email. And its been taken down!

    To be fair, its probably the biggest case of "hacking" thats yet to happen. Millions of sites to go down is not a minor case for them to be dealing with. I think this guys gonna get tracked down fast!

    Who is the best company to go with hosting then? I went with them because they were relatively cheap.

    What I don't get is how a DoS attack could take it all down? Surely is must have been one massive attack to take down GoDaddy right? Can't of been just one person?

    As I stated, this didn't really affect me massively. It was just quite annoying not being able to retrieve some emails which i required to get on with some work. What I don't understand is the lack of worry from fellow Eg'ers though.

    One guy managed to take down millions of websites. Affecting business all around the world. Companies that host their own websites have no problems but this is a worry for lots of other people. GoDaddy was targeted this time, but there is no reason this could not get used on anyone else as its already been shown.

    We host our own servers but we use GoDaddy for DNS registration.. So we had problems.  Naturally we could still use them using IP addresses but not many customers know how to do that.

    I find it odd that the DNS listings (or lacks thereof) propagated to other DNS servers. This may not have been just a DDoS attack but also a subversion of the DNS system.

    While DNS is pretty famous for its flakiness (go DNSSEC today!) this just seems to have happened because DNS wasn't caching godaddy's records for some reason. So once godaddy's DNS masters popped off the internet, all the records just disappeared. I'm not sure why the system was configured not to cache the records downstream - perhaps there's some sort of flag they can set to indicate that since godaddy records change all the time, it's not worth caching them.

    To be honest, DNS caching causes more problems than it solves when it's used. Changing ISPs? Then expect your site to be down to at least half your customers for a good few hours. IP being DDOSsed? Change IP and ditto.

    The mystery is why the attacker took down goDaddy, as he doesn't seem to have anything against the company. Seems to be more of a 'just because he can' (be a dick) kind of a thing.

    Anyway, all sorted out now as far as I can tell (although half my blogroll is still not looking quite right).

    Didnt GoDaddy do something that the internet elders didnt like? Like support mitt romney or that piracy bill or something?

    My memory is hazy, but I think its a revenge attack for something stupid.
