There's an interview with Valve in the New York Times from Saturday, that says Steam's Big Picture UI mode is out "on Monday".

Yeah just saw this on RPS. Nice, gonna book in some big TV time later on and give it a whirl.

Been waiting eagerly for this, it's such a tiny tiny thing but switching games without taking the mouse and keyboard with me will be good. Not the biggest DRM fan but Steam is a good one at least for features...mega cheap games mostly to be fair but nice features to.. :)

Ooh a pad based browser that isn't shit. Bold claim :) Looks cool though.

Probably will go live after 6pm here (UK), probably won't get the telly until late anyway.

Seems interesting, though my main PC isn't connected to a TV. Could be handy.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

My pc is situated behind my plasma, Steam already on it. I also already use an Xbox controller. Remind me what the benefit of this is again?

Er how do you use Steam with a controller? :)

It's no magical Steam changing thing it's just using Steam from a pad and a mode better designed for the big telly. Sure you could use a mapper for the control anyway but I've found they mess with games when running even just a windows profile.

Surely you need a mouse and or a keyboard to open up steam in the first place? Can't see how you could just have a PC linked to your HDTV without M&K.

you could have steam start with the pc and have it boot straight to the library and big picture mode.

It would be awkward in a traditional pc use case but it would work fine for some people.

I don't unless I'm playing games, that's the whole point of this.

Put steam.exe in the startup folder?

Yeah, and of course if modding or fiddling about to make things work you still will, but a lot works from start and once you've flicked over and sat down that's it. No need to get up, no need to drag the K&M over with you. Simple thing that's all.

I think people are believing it to be something wonderful when it's really just an option that's nice to have if you game on a telly a lot.

Windows 8 and it's Modern UI with Steam as a tile and wait for it...Kinect 2.0 or maybe Smartglass on your phone or tablet to select the steam tile.

Haven't had contact with windows for a while, but how would it work in you replaced explorer with steam as the windows shell in the registry?

    any ETA on it?

Quite eager to try it actually.

All they need to do now is include a media library (local video playback and the like). Then it could be an interesting XBMC replacement.

This is exactly what I'm thinking.
Really would tempt me to buy a few extra components and put together a living room box(I currently play on the second TV in my "office").

It has an apps menu apparently so you can add your favourite media player quite easily. You could easily do the opposite.

    What do you mean?

Edit: Obviously I understand the first sentence, not clear on the second part.

    A player isn't a library, though.
  • Deleted user 10 September 2012 20:03:22
Yeah, it's a work around for now though.

Add steam bigpicture to your media players app menu
  • Deleted user 10 September 2012 20:16:50
    Appears to be live.
  • Deleted user 10 September 2012 20:18:34
Or not. It was live, now it isn't. Either that or my Steam's being weird.

Does it turn your laptop into an 40 inch HDTV if you try it. That would be awesome.
  • Deleted user 10 September 2012 20:25:08
    Damn you, meme!!
  • Deleted user 10 September 2012 20:26:07
I restarted, it installed an update, I had the Big Picture button. But then it crashed and now I don't.
