Not constantly, no. I much prefer that it disappears and you can bring it back with a touch, but that's just me. The main problem is apps that don't allow that, meaning you have to lock the phone/hit start to check.

Incidentally, what I do in IE is drag the app bar up just a tiny bit to invoke the top bar and then just let it drop back down.

So, what are some good apps? I've got the basic essentials so I'm wondering what hidden gems there are.

@Tom_Servo Depends what you're after really. I don't tend to use a lot of apps, as I end up using the browser for most things. That said, I use the Natwest app quite a bit (obviously useless if you're not with Natwest!), and SuperTube for Youtube-y needs - Microsoft released an excellent Youtube app recently that Google then forced them to gimp. Other than that, I have TVCatchup, iplayer, Speedtest and a handful of games and reference-type apps (Skyrim quest guide, Game of Thrones DB).

I have had my phone for eight months now and you know what REALLY PISSES ME OFF?

Microsoft, for the love of God, please add a screen rotation lock.

... people like to lie down sometimes, and trying to text someone or viewing the Internet makes the screen go haywire. Just do it please. For the sake of my sanity.

I genuinely despair at some of these incredibly daft omissions.

I always thought why isn't there an option for this. Would be ideal.

Instead they like going backwards by taking out FM Radio support but that is coming back in the next update apparently.

I know they are trying to catch up with iOS and Android but they are drip feeding. Suppose Windows Phone 9...

I've never needed a rotation lock personally, but it is an odd omission considering Win8/RT has it.

Yeah, a rotation lock would be nice. The Twitter app doesn't rotate though, so that helps a bit.

Is there a way to check for app updates manually, or at least set it to do it every day or something?

By the way, I love my 8X. Really impressed. The interface makes the Apple one look primitive, and it wasn't too long ago that seemed slick as.

I can't go back to Windows phone until they let me use a different search engine as the default. Bing just seriously sucks arse

I be switching to Android... and I fucking hate Android.

There's still loads of aspects of Windows phone I love, but there are just too many downfalls (especially like that damn search).

Nokia Drive is still utterly fantastic though. I'm going to keep my phone around just for that. :)

Ok guys... I made an app for myself because I love Space Invaders :) and then threw it on the store.

Nokia Drive is awesome. Used the offline maps all week last week in LA during E3 and it worked like a charm. Quite impressed with it.

FM Radio support is desperatly needed by me as well and there are some other quirks like not being able to set time automatically and of course a lack of good apps.

Think I am going to have to buy a different Windows Phone 8 phone (how daft does that sound out loud?) because in less than six weeks I have cracked my Lumia 820 screen two times, both of which looked quite comparable to a glacier ice sheet cracking.

    Each time costs me 100.

    *weeps*

Not only that, my phone seems to feel unnaturally warm at the base most of the time and it'll surely only get worse a year (or so) down the line.

Trouble is, the Lumia 820 screen is very exposed and there are no such 'softening' edges for the phone to absorb the drop.

    : (

I feel compelled to use O2 Recycle, continue using my old Nokia phone (the ones that last five or six days on one charge!) and maybe wait until the end of August when they often unveil new phones thus the 'old ones' usually become a fair bit cheaper, SIM free of course.

    @Baihu1983

How are you liking your new phone?

... I saw one in the flesh a few days ago and I REALLY like it!

It shouldn't bother me in the slightest, but the thinness and weight of the Lumia 925 is refreshingly wonderful.

Sorted my Lumia 820 screen out on the same day too; waved goodbye to 100 just like that.

Yeah, I've got the clunky 920, be good to hear if an upgrade is worth it.

I am sure it is going to be superb however, it will most likely be much more of a tank than the Lumia 920 currently is!

... think it is using the PureView technology and that shall add an extra bulk and a half to the EOS phone.

@CharlieStCloud Really liking it. Every thing is nice and fast and the camera is awesome. Getting really good pics from it.

And yeah despite the size its incredibly light to hold and I was surprised they actually have it set up so its super piss easy to transfer numbers from an iphone[was a bitch having to do it manually when my dad got a samsung last year].

Best phone Ive had by far and that's only after a week or so. App store is a little light at the moment but still got some cool ones.

The Lumia 1020 has been leaked quite significantly to the point of not only seeing what the phone looks like, but the colours they'll be using (black, white and yellow) as well as a sample photo proving the phone shall be using the PureView technology.

... and the photo in question is so detailed, that other phone(s) cameras/pictures look underwhelming in comparison.

I just hope once this is out, the other current Lumia phones (920, 820 and 720 in particular) will drop in price!

As i wrote in the Nexus 4 thread i got a chance to try NFC between my Nexus and a Lumia 920. Really wonderful way of sharing stuff. Sad to see Apple being grumpy on that front.

The more i see of the 1020, the more i want it as my next phone. It would certainly do away with the awkward phone and compact camera combo that usually follows me in days out.

And that hilarious tank-like camera grip accessory! Genius! Camera grip plus extra battery? Yes, please!

Can't wait for the official reveal tomorrow!

Got a 925 yesterday. Its glorious. Camera is probably better than my old dslr judging by the pics ive taken so far.

Still a bit lost with WinPho8 but most of it making sense. Happy bunny.

Don't judge the quality of mobile pics from just watching them on a mobile screen though.
That said, Nokia are going the extra mile with their cameras. That 1020 will be one insane piece of mobile camera kit
