@sport The 620 has definitely converted my view of Windows phones. Was considering a flagship 'droid previously but likely now that Lumia 720 will be my next phone.

The 620 itself is minimalist and certainly unremarkable in black but that will change when the yellow shell arrives.

Windows 8 is lovely. It's silky smooth and simple but in a good, uncluttered, back-to-basics way. Everything works as it should (no crashes yet) and I do particularly like the Nokia apps. The apps store is lacking in comparison to Google Play/itunes but that made me realise just how much dross is on those. I've yet to try out the SNES emulator!

Camera is functional. As you'd expect, it doesn't perform brilliant in low light but it's absolutely passable aside.

The stock dialer is a bit pony though, RapDialer is much better.

tldr;
Lumia 620: Not bad looking, functional Windows 8 phone on the cheap. Recommended if you're on a budget and would like something different. Don't go in expecting wonders and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

On that note: where can I get other shells for it? The wife's dying for a pink one. Google isn't helping.

This may not be very helpful at present however, you could always check out Expansys from time-to-time as they both sell the rather lovely colourful shells for the Lumia 820, which I happily own.

The new Lumia 720 is exactly how I hope Nokias' next flagship will (hopefully) share comparisons to.

Only 9 milli-metres thin and a shy over 127 grams ... makes the Lumia 920 looks and feels even more tank-like!

I just noticed a new wave of apps for WP8. RBS has finally given us an app. A shame I don't bank with them, but hopefully Barclays will bring one out soon as well. But what is bizarre, is that according to reviews, it is only usable in Scotland? WTF?
You need to have a RBS personal account with debit card, be over 11 and have a mainland UK mobile number starting with 07 to use this service.

This service is currently not available for RBS business banking.

This is service will be available for RBS customers in Scotland (only).
@sanctusmortis Thinking 2 more is actually 48 remember. Also consider buying a sim free or recon for much less than a contract.

Grade A HTC 8X is only 259 from smartfonestore. Got one myself and the condition was flawless.

Mr O2 is FINALLY getting on the Lumia 920 train.

It's almost like they know March is when my upgrade is due...wait a second they do know!

:)
God damn it.
Toss up between this and the ATIV S, which is the better phone?

Most reviews seem to side with the 920 because of the camera and Nokia's slew of exclusive apps.

Speaking of which, Play To is now available in beta - handy for all you proponents of DLNA-based streaming.

I'm still loving my ATIV S. Simple, unobstrusive and lightweight. Crashes occasionally but nothing major. Camera is good if not great. Micro SD expansion rocks. I now have a 64GB card for media and the main memory for apps.

Yeah, the expandable memory is the ATIV S's trump card but it wasn't enough to sway me (plus it took so damn long to come out).

The camera quality of the 920 was really important for me - being able to take wobble-free video of my kids was a huge plus. I also think the screen has a slight edge over the one in the ATIV having now seen them running in the flesh together - just a personal preference though.

Those prices

Lol

They can't be serious, right?

I mean, for the tariff I'm after;
300min, unlimited texts, 500mb data, 22pm
Handset prices;
Lumia-330
ATIV S-200

As far as I understood they were nearly level in terms of specs, etc. with them each trading blows with what's better where. But for a 130 markup difference.

What?

Someone's taking the piss there. There should only be around an 80 difference based on the sim-free prices over on clove. Plus, if you look over at O2 they're offering the ATIV S for a similar deal (200 minuted rather than 300 though) for only 125 for the handset.

It is a tank of a phone ...

... it's the reason why I chose a Lumia 820 in the end, as well as being a shy over 200 cheaper for a SIM free model.

Enjoy your (long awaited) new toy Mr. McMonkey!

@mcmonkeyplc You'll get used to it surprisingly quickly. I thought my Omnia 7 was big when I first got it, but after getting my 920, it felt almost comically small. I'm perfectly used to the size of my Lumia now. Not that I ever found it unwieldy to begin with.

I am indeed getting used to the size and weight of the TANK :)

It's an odd beast. I would've thought that the physical aspects of the phone count against it but I think I like the fact that it's so solid. Makes for a massive difference to the GS3 and GS2 that I've had over the past 2 years. It doesn't feel plasticy at all. That said I never really had a problem with the GS3 or GS2 even though others thought that they felt too plastic.

Annnnnnd after only 3 days with the phone I've managed to scratch it. :(

Dropped from shoulder height (while attempting to take a photo one handed)on to a tiled floor in a bar.

It bounced and for a second a thought it was a goner but it worked fine not a scratch on the screen despite it ending up face down but the initial impact area just behind where the sim goes in has a little scratch on it.

Tough bitch. :)

Just got myself an HTC 8S after dropping my Xperia S and smashing it to bits. Needed something cheap, and was a little disheartened to have to go for something with such a modest spec, but I've got it and I have to say I'm really impressed, it goes like shit off a shovel. Only drawback for me really is that you can't install to SD, which is kind of mental as I only have 1.2GB of usable space. Anyone know if this is likely to be addressed in an update?

I was wondering if there are any people out there who have made the switch from iphone to WP8 and are happy with their decision?

If so, What have you gained and what do you miss?

Really can't decide whether to make the switch or not.

Ha - I should give this an hour or so and if I don't see any responses then I'll have to assume there isn't anyone!

There's an article written by an iphone fan who basically loves it and prefers a lot of it's features over ios.

ed: http://www.techhive.com/article/2029353/an-iphone-fans-month-with-windows-phone-week-one.html

Also

http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2012/12/22/30-days-with-windows-phone-8-perspective-from-an-admitted-ios-addict/

Personally I think everything about them has shat on IOS for ages, Apple forgot about their ease of use thing years ago and the design of IOS is just so stale.

My work phone is an iPhone, although it took a while to adjust I much prefer my lumia and the ease you can whip through menus.

Probably my favourite phone.

Cheers DB and Load - that was incredibly helpful. I procrastinised all morning before deciding to plump for an iphone 5 again. Went into the shop and they were wanting 209 plus a 2 year 37 a month contract and I thought - fuck that. Thanks to your article I have just upgraded with a few clicks on the 02 website to a 920. I guess we'll see how it goes.
