Why isn't gmaps as good as a proper Google solution? It's worked perfectly any time I've tried it.
While thats a valid point I think it actually somewhat reflects one of the reasons that wp really isn't close to the other two at this point.

The major devs just aren't bothered writing ports; decent or otherwise. This being the reason the WP(7) market was extremely uninspiring.

Obviously I can't speak to WP8 but I always felt like WP7 was faking almost everything. It seemed to me everything only ran properly if it was the sole focus on the screen or one of the core components of the OS (email, SMS, phone).

Everything else just seemed to be runing in a shell.

I personally think it pisses all over any touch keyboard I've ever used.

It's my biggest doubt about moving away from android.

You can get a free trial.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

Tempted by the 920. Gonna have to go try one out then maybe get one for me and the woman and give this 4S to the kid. Thing is I kinda want a tablet but the one I like the look and price of the most is the nexus 7. Spreading myself across all three platforms seems kinda wasteful

    @Khanivor

The 920 is a lovely bit of kit.

I assume you will be getting it through a phone contract? If not, as lovely as it is It's not worth the insane price being asked for it.

When it works it is great but it has this infuriating habit of randomly moving text about and replacing large chunks with no warning to the point where I turn it off at times and use the stock keyboard.

Very happy. Just annoyed to have to reinstall every single app manually, I'm glad they finally have a backup feature so that should be my last time doing that.
Clove provided a messed up charger though so I need to look for one as well as a wireless plate if I can find a reasonably priced one.

    http://www.nokiafreecharger.com

Enter your details there (fake the purchase date and don't worry about the unique code as some 920s didn't come with one) and see what happens. Can't hurt to try anyway.

I forgot I could reinstall the apps over wifi from my PC through windowsphone.com. Very handy :D

Yeah, the back-up utility should really have been in place from the start of WP7.

I'm going to try the free charger thing on Friday, by which time it will have been two weeks. I'd probably have bought one if they were more reasonable - the Nokia-branded ones are 50-odd on Amazon.

    EDIT

That's what I did, too - just go down the list and *click, click, click*
    Job done :D

Yeah, transferring things from WP7 to WP8 is a right pain in the arse. You need to use windowsphone.com to transfer your purchased games and apps over, and I can't seem to move over my texts at all.

Loving WP8 though. The ability to resize tiles seems like a small thing but does loads to make it easier to organise your feeds.

Well, that's my free wireless charging plate requested. Fingers crossed, as my box was missing the unique code.

Apparently Orange are "cracking down" on resellers giving people any colour Lumia 920 other than black.

My mum, having seen my white 920, decided she wanted a red 920. She was due an upgrade (from an HTC Mozart), so I told her to go to P4U, as I did. She asked for a red handset, they scanned it through: denied. She asked for a white: also denied. She ended up getting a black model, which admittedly looks a lot nicer than I expected it to - I still prefer my white one though!

The guy apparently told her that Orange had been contacting stores (or maybe P4U management?) to tell them not to give out other colours. Why the hell would Orange want to actively limit their customers' choices?

Seems weird, because I was offered a choice of red, white or black just last week.

In fact I think the white is an Orange exclusive.

Only thing I can think of is that they have a surplus of black models.

I wanted a purple one but they didnt have any.

$99 for a 920 with a contract seems like a good deal. But then I can get a refurb iPhone 5 for the same amount of money.

Is the 920's camera as good in low light as advertised?

I got mine free with contract :-)

The camera seems pretty good to me. Using any camera in low light I tend to have the flash. Can't say how it compares to the adverts because I haven't seen the adverts and haven't played with the camera enough to be able to form a detailed opinion on the matter, but as far as casual everyday use goes it seems perfectly fine. If I wanted a really super-duper photo experience, I'd just buy a dedicated camera.

The white is supposed to be an EE-exclusive, or at least it was when I got my white model on the 9th. Red and yellow are P4U-exclusive, and Orange are only supposed to be offering black. The guy actually tried to give my mum both a red and white model and the system wouldn't accept it, so it seems Orange have had a word in their ear, perhaps in the last few days.

The camera is exceptional in low-light. Frequently, you won't see anything in the viewfinder, then you'll take a pic and there's somehow an image.

That's what interest me most as far as separating it from the iphone. I take loads of pics with my phone simply because it's always with me. The 4S does a great job till we get to those 25% of pics in low light which then just look like fucking ass.

Maybe I should stop trying to take some many pictures of butt sex in the dark...

Maybe you should, but where would the fun be in that?

I'm just waiting for my old phone to charge up and I'll try to put up a comparison shot or two to give you some idea. Incidentally, if you also take a lot of video I'd recommend the Lumia 920 - recording is absolutely rock solid due to the image stabilisation.

I think the whole idea of making colours exclusive to selected networks is so bloody stupid and petty.

    I mean, seriously. Fucking colours.

That would be awesome. And the video stablisation also appeals a good bit. I don't tend to take too much video with my 4S be-e-e-ccc-ass-ee iii-t. T.. Jud. er. er. er.sss

My SkyDrive is being a bit temperamental, so bear with me a moment. On a separate note, my Omnia 7 feels ridiculously small now!

I haven't had a chance to take any video yet, but there's some good examples on youtube, like this one.

Ok, quick n' dirty low-light comparison. Both images were taken on default settings, flash OFF for both phones, taken under identical lighting (room with one corner lamp on).

    Omnia 7

    Lumia 920

Edit - just signed out of SkyDrive to check the links are public, and for some reason they aren't...

Edit 2 - ok, that should work.
